Hi Mary

Hooray! I'm not sure what I did wrong last time -

http://tinyurl.com/276dgf

but I can do it too now. Good to know that it uses the same ref each time a short form is requested. Thanks very much, step by step was what I needed today.

Many thanks

Sorry, Ivy, am I repeating myself? :-)

There's no need to register for tinyurl.

To use it, first copy the long address, then go to www.tinyurl.com and paste the address where it says "Enter a long URL to make tiny". Then click on "Make TinyURL!"

When I entered your long address, it gave me this short one:

http://tinyurl.com/276dgf

which works fine.

Hi Gala and Mary

No, not an expert in finding people, and guilty of posting random thoughts w/o proper follow-up on this thread.

Mary, you've suggested tinyurl before - I had a look at that point and couldn't get anywhere with it....sorry. Is it something you have to register for? How would I, as a for instance, use it to shorten the address I gave on page 6?

MaryfromItaly

MaryfromItaly Report 19 Feb 2008 17:13

Ivy, can I suggest you use www.tinyurl.com to shorten long addresses, because a lot of people get confused by broken links.

MaryfromItaly

MaryfromItaly Report 19 Feb 2008 17:10

Gala, don't enter the name you're searching for in the box at the top of the page where it says "Advertisement" - that's just an ad that takes you to Ancestry, which you have to pay for.

Go further down the page, to where it says "To search FreeBMD enter the details of the search below".

Yes Gala, freebmd is free. Are you sure you are using the correct site. This is the right address

Ivy,
The freebmd keeps asking me for credits , is it free ? not that I expect everything in life to be free .

Ivy,
The thread you posted to me is really complicated to follow , I do not know if they are my ancestors .
It was me who asked in why would my gr gran move to the Isle of Man to give birth to 2 more children and then Henry cleared off leaving Maria with her 4 children in which she came back to Bburn.
You are an expert finding people for other people, is it your work of living ?

I am 50% sure Maria was never registered at birth,
That's why I cannot find her, anyway I am applying for a cert for James ( Her son ) and see what cropped up , if it is Fick or not , On James sister Sarah's cert does have Fick on it ( scratching my head as in confusion )
I am really grateful for your help, Potty
My partner Tony found the site of Lancs BMD as I missed out some letters on it ..Oops !

Hi Gala,

I'm losing it completely with this thread, so apologies if this has been mentioned before. Someone did ask why the Ramsbottoms should go to the Isle of Man for the births of the two younger children, and it made me wonder how many people on the Isle of Man have a connection with Blackburn (and vice-versa).

A family of Pilkingtons from Blackburn are running a hotel there in 1891 (I know that Henry, his (first?) wife Maria and their two sons are in Blackburn at that point). A couple of visitors to the hotel are from Blackburn - Annie Hartley and Ada (Fecik? - as transcribed by Ancestry). Ada is 16 years old. I'll see if I can find her in 1881.

[Edit - with her parents Henry and Sarah Fecitt in Blackburn in 1881, age 6]

Hi Gala,

To get to the site I mentioned, you need to copy and paste the web address into your browser bar. When I'm pasting long addresses, I break them up into more than one line so that the ref doesn't scroll off the side of the screen (along with everyone else's messages on that page of the thread).

You'll have to copy and paste both bits of the web address into your browser bar (i.e. put it back together as one long address).

....that is, if you are looking for the background info on birth registration generally. On the other hand, if you are looking for the indexes to the local register offices in Lancashire, it will be the shorter address Potty has posted at the foot of page 6 of this thread.

Potty Report 19 Feb 2008 13:13

Is the address you are using for Lancs BMD -
www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/

Have you also tried this one for parish registers-
www.lan-opc.org.uk/.

Birth registratiion wasn't made compulsory unitl 1875 and even after that some people weren't registered. My mum was born in 1906 and her birth was never registered.

Hi Ivy ,
I cannae get the lancs BMD site ?

MaryfromItaly

MaryfromItaly Report 19 Feb 2008 01:49

Gala, I've just skimmed quickly through the thread. I hope I'm not stating the obvious, but I noticed you said you thought Maria might be German: did you realise that "German" was the name of a parish on the Isle of Man? This is the birthplace given for Maria Vick in the 1901 census that Glen found.

Will look it up tomorrow ,

Hi Gala,

This site has some useful comments:

http://www.lancashire.gov.uk/environment/
birthsmarriagesdeaths/historians.asp

When the system of birth registration was introduced in 1837, everyone was expected to comply - but there was no penalty if you didn't (until 1875). It also seemed like duplication if you were already baptising your child.

Ceefer Report 18 Feb 2008 23:20

Selena , As we all have not beable to find Maria Fick , maybe her birth was not registered as it was not compulsary till 1875, I read about that by another person on the " Tip board " is it true ?.
