Hi Mike and thanks alot for taking the time to look.

I don't think the Thomas on the 1871 in the Marines can be my Tom because he also appears on the 1881 married to Eliza with about 6 children.
This must be the same one because it's the same birth year, born in Leics and he is still living in Devon, his profession is also R. Marines. My Thomas can be found in Leicester with Betsy on the 1881.

The earlier census's look interesting but could these be the family of the Thomas in Devon.

There are a few others that could fit the bill born 1836 / 7 in Leicestershire but how can i be sure i have the right family.

Thanks again for your time
Sue

I wonder if any of you clever people on here could point me in the right direction, i'm at a total loss !!
I'm looking for a Thomas Palmer .
I have him on the 1901 listed as Tom Palmer born 1837 Leics. Wife Betsy and 4 children

1891 Tom Palmer same details but this time he is a boarder. Betsy is head of household, Betsy and all children named Underwood

1881 Thomas Palmer same details this time head , Betsy and children all Palmer.

Betsy Moore married Richard Underwood in 1868 in Blaby. and i think he died in 1877
All Thomas and Betsys children were registered as Palmer.
Betsy died in 1922 the death was registered as Underwood. So it looks as if Thomas was already married
To make matters worse on his daughters marriage cert he is named as John Thomas Palmer

The thing is i cannot find anything definate, earlier than 1881 on Thomas so have hit a brick wall. How can i proceed ???
Any idea's would be most welcome
Thanks for reading
Sue

Mike,
I presume sophia could be a sister, don't know about twins though.
Have you found anything on Alfred Alfonze/Alphonse?
Would I be able to access any court records online for military imprisonment for desertion?
I did find all their children on the LDS site. Sarah Kirk remarried after he abandoned her, but the lady I am helping has no surname for the 2nd husband.
All the children went to Fostercare, but I think only 2 are still alive, aged, and don't know anything.
ciao!
