Hi Christine,

Sorry - I am just catching up with things and have just seen your posting.

Interesting to see that Harriet is a widow and living on own means in 1901-I always forget to search the names of other family members. Clever girl.

So - James wasnt still practising in 1939 - he had died by 1901!!! Maybe they forgot to cancel his subscription to the British Optical Association or maybe they hadnt the heart!!!

Interesting to note, that grand-daughter Jane Wood was living with her grand-mother in 1901-maybe she wasnt well, she was 78 when all was said and done, and that was a good age for the turn on the century!?

From the number of staff employed I think that they may have glazed spectacles on site. I think Herbert's occuation may mean he made the lenses rather than mirrors.

Hi Christine,

No - I am going to the Nottingham archives. I will be looking more into the marriage of James Taylor and anything else I can find on his family.

I must make a list of things I want to try to find - before I go - so that I can stay focused!!!

Christine,

I have found a death on FreeBMD that very much looks like James Taylor. The age is right anyway. I will check it on Tuesday at the Archives.

I will also take a note of all the different addresses and see if I can find anything in the electoral registers.

Am I being a bit dense? but is there anyway [other than trawling throught the microfilm of all the churches in the area] that I can identify where marriages took place?

Elaine

ps/ I will get to Norwich Archives one day - but seeing though I have a few days booked off I may well make it to Leicester in the next few weeks!!

oh - by the way Christine - what does the C&G mean in 'Looking Glass Maker (C & G)' is this optician terminology?
