A look at Sarah's life

Sarah Maria Quested was born about 1840 and the daughter of James Quested and Anna Maria Jardine. She had an older brother and sister and younger brothers and sisters. They lived in St Georges district of North London in the county of Middlesex.

Sarah Maria first had her daughter Anna Maria out of wedlock in 1867, when she herself would have been 27 years old. Anna Maria presumed the surname Bridger when her mother married and was James Henry's half sister.

The bmd index also shows other possible siblings for Sarah that died young, but certificates would be needed to prove the relationship.

It was not necessary to register births until about 1871 so you may not find a certificate for Sarah Maria's birth. But there may well be a baptism record for her.

Henry Charles Bridger is another matter. I'll take a look for him later.

I think Henry Charles Bridger just might have been son of George and Ann Bridger also born in Middlesex

He is Age 20 on the 1871 Census and living in Tower Hamlets, Poplar and I am unable to find him on the 1881 Census. But only the marriage certificate to Sarah Maria will tell you whether or not I'm correct.

Don't apologise for having doubts. A good researcher doubts everything they find until they find the records to prove it! And never accept only one record as proof. Births, deaths and marriages all need to be backed up with certificates. Baptism and burial records need to be backed up with parish records. And don't forget to google everything!

The more sources you have for life events the truer and better your tree will be. And lastly make sure you note where each and every snippet of information has come from, each web address, each book, each researcher you share information with.

Pleased to hear that you have been able to make sense of the info now and as Sliwowski no need to apologise.

Well done to you Sliwowski for explaining it so well. There was such a lot of info and it must have been hard for you to follow Hazel.I also used to find it was easier to understand when I had printed it out.

If you get the marriage cert will you let us know the details from that and then we can hopefully trace Henry on the census.

Just out of curiosity what was the occupation shown on the birth cert?

So pleased that light dawned :) It does get easier the longer you are into this hobby, you realise everything is a shade of grey, not black and white.

I would strongly recommend you buy yourself a family tree program for your own computer - Family treemaker 2006 v16 can be bought for about a tenner from twr computing and you get a free month sub with ancestry.co.uk with it - bargain! You can enter your info as you go along, change it, add time lines, make a homepage that you password protect (or not) on the net so you can invite family to see the stuff and you can back it up to cd and the internet so you cant lose the lot if something awful happens to your puter.

And buy the necessary certificates (at £7 :)) to back up your info and research.

Hi, just wanted to give an update regarding all the information everyone found for me - just to let you know I have received marriage certs and the info given matches - so looks like I can progress forward (I am so excited).

In fact I am doing a bit of digging at the moment and I have just one question for 'Sliwowski' if you are about.

I know this is a while ago but you found Sarah Maria childrens, ie: George, James, Charles, Henry and Anne Maria - but you mentioned another one by the name of William Thomas (Ing) but I cannot find him on any census - just wondered if you cld remember where you got the info for him from??

Thanks for the info, have received Henry Charles and Sarah Maria marriage cert today (together with Sarah's parents marr cert). Information matches regarding seaman, etc - however he died when or prior to James Henry's (known as Henry) birth - so I would have thought that he probably did think of James Ing as his dad - quite sad really. Do have Henry Charles dad's name and profession so hopefully can get a bit further. At the moment I am doing Sarah's branch - my god there are just so many people to look for - she had several children and appears that she has several siblings aswell - but have to say really really enjoying researching the information - I get so excited when I get something.

Did you do your family tree? Having a few probs with putting my tree on here what with 2nd husbands - would you recommend a site or program that is good to put a family tree on

Glad to hear all is well and I'm glad the info we found for you is checking out okay.

There are lots of threads on these message boards recommending various family tree programs. (And it is always better to have an external program, rather that rely on GR alone). The general concensus seems to be that you get what you pay for. In other words the more you are prepared to pay for a family tree program the fancier it will get, the more functions it will have, the more reports/trees it will produce and probably the more complicated it will be to use!

One of the favourites around GR seems to be Family Tree Maker 2006 which is available from Ancestry.com and doesn't cost a bomb!

Can I be cheeky and just quickly ask something, not sure whether you read my last mess on page 5 regarding details of finding William Ing - I have looked on the 1891 census here and cannot find him - can you remember if you found him on GR on the census or another web address, only if you don't mind though

I took William's details straight from the Birth Index. However, Christine found you the 1891 Census for the family, (including him) on page 5 of this thread.

The 1891 census record cannot be found on GR under Ing, Bridger or Bridges.

Just out of interest, who does the marriage certificate say is Henry Charles' father? :)

I found the record on Ancestry. The family must be mistranscribed on GR.

If you would like the image pm me your email address and I'll send it you.

I use Family Tree Maker 2006 software, and find it very good and easy to use. There are some more up to date versions but I believe the 2008 wasn't much good.

I think you can buy 2006 from TWR computing for about £10 which includes one months subscription to Ancestry.
