From the early 1700s to 1871, the defense of Canada was primarily the responsibility of British military and naval forces. Therefore, the military authorities created different types of documents most of which are held at the National Archives in England in various War Office and Admiralty series. However, other records created in Canada remained here when the British Forces left in 1871. Library and Archives Canada holds many of those documents and they are regrouped into one major fonds, RG 8.

When Veterans Affairs was notified of the death of a First World War veteran, a death card was created and those cards are now in the custody of Library and Archives Canada and are used as a finding aid to the personnel records of the First World War.
This collection includes death cards up until the early 1960s [so sometimes this falls within a provincial BMD closure period on deaths, which makes this collection quite useful on occasion]

WAS A COAL MINER AT DINNINGTON when he went to BELGIUM TO SERVE AS A MEDIC I WOULD LIKE TO FIND ANY RECORDS AND REQUEST HELP IF POSSIBLE Marian Hunt nee Camsey I presume he would be in a Yorkshire rgt I havent a clue how to find him in Belgium
