Thank you Janey, you seem to have a very hectic life, hope it settles down soon.

Marian Report 8 Jan 2010 18:23

Found out yesterday Thomas Frederick was an asumption made by my cousin, I asked her because it was bugging me why it was not on Jessie's birth cert. Profession; I clearly remember her saying he worked with horses and got kicked in the face, disfigured, put in an institution and committed suicide. Too dramatic for me to be convinced. Jane Tedstone was mother no mention of Mary. Memory: she told me she ran away when she was 21, it didn't connect with me it must have been from Stourbridge. In her 20's she was a member of the Communist Party and told me she went on Marches. She had a hammer and cycle badge. I can belive that because her opposition to capitalism was still evident when I was a child and she spent time cutting out pictures of the Royal Family, putting them on string and hanging them in the outside loo.

can't get the hang of what to do when run out of space. Anyway it was my uncle who said she went to Accrington in her early teens, I don't think I can rely on his memory. I always imagined Beryl and Dennis as being older because of the bullying stories and was surprised how much younger they were. However, I do belive there was cruilty, one Christmas she told me the contents of her Christmas Stocking was a birds head, giblits and cinders and the family thought it was funny. John Hadley was she said a Ley Preacher, who abused her. He was an avid grower of flowers and veg, Jessie had to go and sell his toms before she went to school. Jennie and Ruabon? She was definitely close to Jessie, she went with her to Stourbridge when Annie was dying, my uncle found a letter. Annie, I think died in 1932, I will check. I have a photo of Jennie holding my

Okay, I'll be back on the weekend and try to get a grip on this tale, because whoever that was with the hammer & sickle badge and hanging the pictures in the loo, I like her now!

cousin. My cousin remembers her. My mum and uncle are named after Jennie's youngest children Robert and Monica, who died young. I can't find any death for Jennie Hall, that makes sense. I know that she went to look after Margaret's children when she died in her later 30s I think, she would have been 62. Margaret's children were Claire and John Blakeman, I remember my father giving Claire an oil painting, one of a pair from my mother's other side (Irish), because she was an artist. Sometimes you should trust your instincts, the photos I have of Jennie and Jessie are uncannily similar in features, or is it that I want to believe it, I don't know, but I hope I have answered everything. Glad you like her, she was something. When the first Asian family moved into her street in Accrington, typically the locals were, to say the least sceptic, she made them one of her best meat and potato pies and took it round to welcome them. They became friends.

Battenburg Report 8 Jan 2010 19:07

Oh Marion, your cousin only assumed Thomas Frederick was Jessies father.
It was interesting reading about Jessie being a Communist back in those days.
Having John Hadley a lay preacher abuse her wouldnt have helped and his horrible children Beryl and Dennis playing tricks on her poor girl.

We must get to the bottom of this. She sounds a lovely generous person There has got to be an answer somewhere

Marian

Marian Report 8 Jan 2010 19:22

I hope we can get an answer, another (memory) my sister said she recalled Jessie saying she was in an orphanage before she went to Annie Hadley. My youngest sister seems to have the same vague memory, sadly I don't. Shame because then its just heresay.

Hi Marian

Without getting into politics and race, your grandmother sounds like a spirited person. Moving onto religion, I hope she's looking down on us from above and appreciating all our efforts.

I can't find a fitting death for Annie Hadley. There is one in 1932 in Stourbridge but she's 7 years too old. Not impossible.

Nor can I find fitting deaths for Robert and Jennie Hall. Perhaps they moved from Haslingden?

Not that these matter, but just add to the doubts.

Food for thought, just found:

Please forgive me, I've had a hell of a shift today and don't feel like I can concentrate to do you justice. Let me have a sleep and I'll be on it tomorrow. Sad isn't it work and little else but sleep. Bear with me. X

Marian Report 8 Jan 2010 20:38

Just before I go, Jessie was also religious, she converted to catholic at some point, it might have been because William Conroy was an Irish Catholic, she attended church regularly and probably would be looking down on us, not sure she would approve of me unearthing secrets, I have often thought about that. but will continue regardless. Madmeg

Madmeg Report 8 Jan 2010 20:53

Well if she was a Catholic she would have wanted us to know the truth.

Whatever the truth, it doesn't make anyone any less precious to us. She sounds like a real star in your family.

A Catholic Communist now theres a contradiction. She must have left the party by then

Madmeg

And if she was a communist she would want us to know the truth.

Hey, let's try to avoid the religion and politics! We have enough to cope with in finding Jessie Tedstone and family.

I can't cope with any more at the mo!

Marian Report 10 Jan 2010 19:51

Oh Margaret, don't work so hard, I feel awful that I do see these things and think, no that can't be right. The times I have looked at that family, and dismissed them, but when you put it all down in front of me (I didn't have the 1911 records), there may be a point in what you are saying. I don't want you to feel stressed. Just have a glass of wine and chill out, forget about the Tedstones etc. It makes some sense though, in that the dates would correspond. Speak to you soon. Love Marian x

Madmeg Report 10 Jan 2010 19:58

Hi Marian

I am on my second glass of wine, I need no encouragement!

I meant my brain wouldn't absorb any more without resorting to pen and paper.

There is apparently good stress and bad stress, and I am pretty sure this is good stress for me, so don't worry about me.

Now I am very good at spending other people's money, but if it were me I would be getting the marriage certificates of Thomas Tedstone to both Mary Jane Bradford in 1892 and Sarah Annie Wood-thingy in 1898, to see if Thomas has the same father and anything else that might help tie him down to being the same man. If he is, that tells us that it was a lie that he died shortly after Jessie's birth.

It still doesn't tell us who on earth Jennie Bradford was - we might have to speculate on that.

But then it was me who advised you to get Jennie Bradford's marriage certificate and it didn't have the father than we wanted.
