Hi Madmeg......Yes i looked back through the thread {again] and saw that all the children listed were in fact the Hall family...not Bradfords ,so apoligies for that, it was very late when i was looking through it all.

Prehaps the marriage cert. of Thomas and Mary Jane Bradford will help, though I think address details are likely to be the same as Jessies birth cert. Maughan Street..... same address as the Bradford family in 1881 but maybe it will tell us more about Thomas, his fathers name and occ. may help us track him in a census prior to his marriage.

Marian please tell us the marriage details as soon as you get the cert.

nicky.

Madmeg Report 13 Jan 2010 22:28

Apologies for using the thread to clear my mind. No worries about the Bradfords Nicky, easily done.

The marriage cert of Thomas and Mary Ann will at least tell us an occupation and father - unless it is one of many I have had that unhelpfully says simply "Dead". We can probably then get a reasonably accurate tale of Jessie Tedstone's ancestry.

But there is more to it than that in this case.

It is about the family situation that resulted in Jessie going to Accrington to live with what at first sight seems like a complete stranger from a different country.

Marian, I did ask you in a PM if anyone recalled Jennie Bradford having a Welsh accent? Not that anyone would remember, so far back! Of course, she might not have been brought up in Wales anyway.

I also suggested to Marian that she try to get access to local Accrington newspapers to see if Jessie's marriage was in there, or her death. Surprising sometimes who turns up at weddings and funerals. But she is a bit stressed at the moment with her son doing exams.

Phew!

Marian

Marian Report 13 Jan 2010 23:11

Hi, I have asked if anyone remembers a Welsh accent, waiting for a reply on that one, the only person who would possibly remember is my uncle, Jennie was still alive in 1947 so he may remember. I have asked my cousin who lives in Accrington to visit the library in search of marriage or birth info she said she will do and will let you know of any outcome.

Marian Report 13 Jan 2010 23:27

Hi, may be nothing but Nicky mentioned 3 Bradford girls and Dudley. When Jessie and Jennie went to visit Annie Hadley my uncle said they went to see her in Dudley.

Madmeg

Madmeg Report 13 Jan 2010 23:38

Thats the registration district in which they were registered at birth. Might not have been quite where they lived, but anything might help.

Just to say that Janey is weighing it all up and at the moment isn't sure she can add anything to the fantastic work we have all been doing.

At least that's my interpretation of what she said.

Hi all, the certificates have arrived. August 18th 1892, The Parish Church of Edgbaston, Birmingham, Thomas Tedstone 23, batchelor, groom, living at St Lukes Road, father Thomas, policeman, married Mary J Bradford, 30 spinster, living at St Lukes Road, father John, miner. Witnesses Benjamin and Mary Darwood.

August 11th 1898. The Parish Church of Kingon, Hereford. Thomas Tedstone 23, batchelor, a coachman, residence Kington, father John Tedstone, labourer, married Sarah Annie Woodhouse, 27 spinster, residence Kington, father Thomas Woodhouse, labourer, witnesses George Tedstone and Hannah Fowler.

Madmeg

Madmeg Report 15 Jan 2010 16:53

Well, my theory that they were the same Thomas looks to be wrong.

And oh, heck, Mary Jane Bradford is 30, which doesn't tie in with the family we found at Maughan Street, Quarry Bank, where the 1892 Jessie was born. However, her father is John and he is a miner. Gee whizz.

Benjamin Darwood is easy enough to find:

Oh, he is a glass cutter, as was the supposed father of Jessie.

Here's his marriage:

Benjamin Darwood 1886 Kings Norton (To 1912) Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire
Mary Tedstone 1886 Kings Norton (To 1912) Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire

And in 1901 with mother in law born Shrewsbury, Shropshire:

There is also a Benjamin Darwood in Westmorland with a wife Jessie in 1891. I wondered if they had a daughter Jessie, but there's no sign of them in 1901 (or 1911), and no birth of a Jessie Darwood.

But neither is there any sign of Mary Jane Bradford born 1862, or Thomas and Mary Jane Tedstone after their marriage. There is a Mary Jane Bradford born June Qtr 1863 in Dudley.

I just had a thought - Marian, the birth cert of Jessie does say she is a girl doesn't it? I have a male Jessie in my own family, I should have thought of that earlier.

Ah, well done Christine, I didn't find that. I found the same family there (Teadstone) in 1881 (with nephews Robert and Thomas) but without Mary, so I wasn't sure at all about them. Thomas is a Brickmakers labourer.

1911 has Eliza still alive age 92 with the Darwoods.

1891 the family is Letstone:

The only likely Thomas Tedstone I can find in 1891 (just before his marriage to Mary Jane Bradford) is in Birmingham City Asylum, age 20, Dog Keeper, Lunatic. It doesn't give a place of birth. He is single.

I have scoured the whole of the census that contains St Luke's Road, Kings Norton (where Thomas and Mary Jane were living on marriage) and there are no Tedstones, Bradfords, or any other recognisable relatives living there.

ChristineinPortugal

ChristineinPortugal Report 15 Jan 2010 20:33

That's the only possibility I can find in 1891, he is just listed as T Tedstone isn't he?

I wonder if Mary Jane Bradford's age is wrong on marriage cert and should be 20.

Marian

Marian Report 15 Jan 2010 21:14

Hi, yes Jessie is a girl on the birth certificate. I didn't mention it before, it was a while ago and my cousin was asking my uncle if he could remember anything that may help us, he said that Jessie was also sometimes also known as Ginney, I thought he might be having a bad day regarding his memory and that he may be getting mixed up with Jennie. Now I'm not so sure.

Madmeg

Madmeg Report 15 Jan 2010 23:02

Hi Christine, yes, that is the one - T Tedstone.

Marian has emailed me a copy of the marriage cert and it definitely looks like 30. Thomas is 23 and it ver definitely isn't 20. There is a bit missing off the bottom of the zero, so she could be 39. The scribe does write a very large 9 in 1892, but his 9 is a bit square, and the zero is pretty oval. It could be 50 at a push (no, it isn't), but I'd say 99% it is 30. The 3 is very like the 3 in 23.

I am really mystified. No sign of this Mary Jane Bradford born c 1862. And no sign of Thomas Tedstone Policeman. No sign of the couple after marriage, no sign of any deaths. Boy is this hard!

Madmeg

Madmeg Report 15 Jan 2010 23:07

Hi Marian. Jessie. Jessica, Ginney, Virginia, Jenny, Jane, Jess, Janet (Scottish version of Jessie), Jean, Jeanie.

My great aunt Polly was Mary. Anything is possible.

I am not letting go of Jessie Tedstone 1892 yet.

That child has no death, and doesn't appear on another census.

I feel the Tedstones are fairly well sorted for now, apart from the copper.

Back to John Bradford, miner.

Just wanted to add is the Thomas /Mary marriage cert. from the GRO?.......

if so the age given for mary could be completley wrong.............GRO certs. are from details taken from the local register offices, so because they`ve sort of been transcribed there is more room for error.......if you get certs. from the local office to which the event took place you get a copy of the original.......far more accurate.

Nicky

Good thinking Nicky. I believe it was from the GRO - will they still have the original records?

Madmeg

Madmeg Report 16 Jan 2010 21:30

Just to inform everyone that Marian has had a sudden and very serious family crisis to deal with. She may not be posting on here for a while as a result. But don't let that stop people from looking for her ancestors, and if you have any queries for Marian I will gauge whether or not to ask her in a PM.

Love to you all

Margaret (on behalf of Marian)

Battenburg

Battenburg Report 16 Jan 2010 21:32

Every 3 months the local reg office sent a copy of their bmds to GRO. Mistakes can be made at this time.

I have a marriage cert where the ages dont match but the other details do.

Madmeg

Madmeg Report 16 Jan 2010 21:32

Just also to say, on Marian's behalf, I have asked GRO to check their records on the age of Mary Jane Bradford, and also asked Birmingham Records Office to do the same.

If she were 20 rather than 30, it would make a big difference.

Margaret
