I have been looking for the birth of Lavinia Hampson b c1842 Cadishead, Lancashire which I know is in the Barton upon Irwell area however I am getting rather confused...

On LancsBMD there is a birth for a Lavinia Hampson b1842 registered at Salford sub district Barton upon Irwell.

Cross checking on Freebmd, so I can order the cert from GRO, I find a birth in 1842 however it is registered in Chorlton, Lancs.

I have looked on Genuki at the registration districts and Chorlton does include Barton upon Irwell up to 1849 however there is no reference to Barton being under Salford whatsoever.

I am sure it must be the same Lavinia and I am hoping someone may be able to confirm this.

Many thanks

Linda

Linda

On freebmd, click on Chorlton, then click on "here"

That shows you the listing of places included in that registration district

Barton Upon Irwell is included in Chorlton from 1837 to 1849

Thanks for your reply Sylvia

I realise that Chorlton covers the Barton upon Irwell area from looking at Genuki however what I cannot understand is why LancsBMD says the birth was registered at Salford and FreeBMD says that the possible same birth is registered is at Chorlton.

Possible 2 births and 2 Lavinia Hampsons ?

I have no answer to that!

except barton upon Irwell is not included in the Salford regostration district according to freebmd

and there is no Lavinia Hampson recorded as registeed in Salford on freebmd

In addition, the 1861 census says she was born in Eccles but was living in Barton upon Irwell.

ancestry does only have 1 Lavinia Hampson showing up

What Lancs BMD says is that the birth was rego'ed in the Barton sub-district and that the registers are now held at Salford.

If you look up the GRO index at FreeBMD, you'll see:

Births Mar 1842 (>99%)
HAMPSON Lavinia Chorlton 20 215

If you now click on Chorlton, then the more info "here" link, you'll see that the RD included Barton upon Irwell for 1837-1849 and did also include a Barton subdistrict at some point 1837-1924. It also says (below the list of villages, etc):
"Registers now divided between Manchester, Salford and Trafford districts."
Well, they'ld hardly be held at Chorlton since the RD was "Abolished : 1.1.1925"

I don't see any incompatibilities here.
FYI: Lancs BMD also indexes by yob, not year of rego.

Many thanks mgnv...what a numpty I am...reading sub district and then thought Salford was the main district and not where the birth registers where held. I wouldn't mind but I have been using the Lancs and Cheshire bmd sites for a few years now!! However I do not understand what you mean by Lancs BMD also indexes by yob and not year of registration...another possible senior moment probably.

My thanks again Sylvia for your time...

I am looking for the parents of Lavinia...hence the birth cert. I have 2 female siblings of my 2x gt grandmother that I cannot find either by marriage or in the census...so I am hoping I may gain a clue from Lavinia's birth cert. There are so many twists and turns within my paternal family...still it keeps the old brain cells working lol.

In the 1851 census Lavinia is mistranscribed as Lavinia Thompson...she is living in Cadishead with my 3x gt grandfather Samuel Howard...status granddaughter. As you have kindly looked...in 1861 she is living with an aunt in Cadishead. From the images on Ancestry the then village of Cadishead lay within the township of Barton upon Irwell....under the parish Church of St Mary's, Eccles. I have found that a few of my ancestors on the census claim they were born in Eccles...where infact, confirmed on certs, they were born in Cadishead.

Kindest regards

Linda

Getting picky again - the main district is now Salford.

If I've followed you correctly, those people whose b.certs say they were born in Cadishead were, in fact, born in the parish of Eccles.

As for the other thing, does this help:

Harold Griffiths Marsh - Child of John Marsh & Martha
Born: 22 Dec 1911

Linda most definitely is still around, maybe not as often as she used to be.

I have "talked" to her fairly recently.
