Hi Elaine
I think a new standard membership is £20 for a year.
Existing members can pay a lot less.

This is from The Help Centre - Frequently Asked Questions.

Standard Membership

This is available for either six months or a year (£14.95/£19.95). You’ll enjoy the same features as the Platinum package, but you only get access to the non-indexed births and marriages records. You can buy credits to access the rest of the records if you want to take your search further.

So I'm assuming they are the current charges if you become a new 'Standard' member.

If you want to see a 'side-by-side' view of what you get in Standard/Platinum packages, then click on the word 'GIFTS' along the top of your GR screen. It also shows a breakdown of cost by (edit: month not moth!) month/6 month/annual - and offers the 'credits' option. I am not exactly sure what the "Non indexed Birth and Marriage records from 1837-1983 (England and Wales)" records are that you get with the Standard package (but not the Platinum).

As a comparison, I had been a 'free' member since 2005 , I upgraded to Standard in May 2012 - at a cost of £16.95 - but also received 50 credits ( probably an offer).

Non Indexed Birth, Marriage and Death means you can look at the original indexes, but you have to scroll through to find the entry you want. Quite quick if you have an unusual surname and a fair idea of the date, but not practical if your name is very common or you have no idea when the event took place.

FreeBMD is better, but it only goes up to about 1960 at present so the Genes ones are useful for more recent events.

It would have been taken off because it was advertising a competitor which is not allowed. Don't forget some of the Genes team are actually members as well so read the threads.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 28 Mar 2013 19:06

BUT ............ threads notifying other members as to free weekends on ancestry, or fmp have been posted many times in the past ........ and have stayed on the Board, with no problem.

and so that leads me to think that Paul's thread was possibly maliciously reported ..............

mind you, I'm saying that without having seen it, and I'm only guessing that it was just a "for your information" type thread.

GlitterBaby Report 28 Mar 2013 19:30

The one thing that had me puzzled as not seen anything about it on the site and have been using it daily all this week. So no idea where Paul got the info from.

i find that i'm a 12 mth standard member....but when i click upgrade,it takes me to Platinum at £80+ per year!
I clicked on gift subscriptions as jannieAnnie recommended, and found out the price of membership(12 month standard came up as £1.67per month, taken as a lump sum)
But how can i upgrade from buying credits to paying the 12 mth standard?

PS..on standard,if i see someone on another members tree, would i be able to message them,to see if its the same person as on mine?

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 28 Mar 2013 19:57

Elaine

Free membership ..............

................ build your tree
............... read the Boards, but NOT post on them
.............. receive pms from paying members, and can reply to those members, BUT not initiate pms yourself

Standard membership ................

.................. build your tree
.................. post on the Boards, start threads, etc
................ send pms to all other membrs, free or paying
................. access the records, but not see any details .............. eg, can see the Index to bmds, but not any detail (eg who married who). You can see names that occur on censuses, and all other records, but not the detail.
................... buy credits if you need to see details.

Platinum membership ................

................. all the above, PLUS ability to see the details on MOST records.

Some recently added records are not open even to Platinum members .................. even they have to buy credits to see them (eg, military records, I think)

does that help?????

That is a BIG help! Thankyou...now just have to find out how to get the yearly standard!

I think that would be sufficient for what I need...

Dear Elaine,

In your post at 19.41 pm you said :
"i find that i'm a 12 mth standard member....but when i click upgrade,it takes me to Platinum at £80+ per year!"

You already are a yearly standard subscriber.
Standard subscribers have to buy credits, as Sylvia has said, the only alternative is a Platinum sub.

Elaine Report 28 Mar 2013 21:14

KenSE...as you can see from above,i did find that i am a standard member, but how can i pay £20 for the year, instead of buying credits?(or could i HAVE paid? the wee circle you click on for continuing membership,is filled in,,it says it will renew automatically)

Elaine

You are a standard member, probably on a 6 month membership?

You do not get anything more with a yearly sub to what you are already getting.

Christina(Lancashire)

Christina(Lancashire) Report 28 Mar 2013 21:27

Elaine, if you have a continuing Standard Membership you will have been billed every 6 or 12 months.

Genes will have sent you a receipt for payment, which will be in your Messages Inbox.

Elaine

Elaine Report 28 Mar 2013 21:33

Jax...went onto "account"...it says:-

you crrently have a 12 month standard subscription
you subscribed on 5th February 2013
your membership expires on the 5th February 2014

Christina, when I finish writing this,I will check my messages, but I only remember purchasing credits.

I have always paid every six months and was not going to renew this time but gave in 10 minutes ago :-D

Even though I did'nt get a discount off the yearly sub it worked out the same price and I got 50 credits I dont want aswell

Edit - I have no idea why Thelma said what she did, maybe she would like to explain
