Elaine

that is precisely why this thread was started

one member, in particular, was reporting most posts containing the word "ancestry"

............... no matter whether the post was asking for a particular look up on ancestry, or whether one of the helpers was saying "the following information was found on ancestry ....."

That member kept insisting that she would continue to RR all posts containing the word, as she believed that it was "disrespectful" to GR to refer to another site.

We helpers have been assured many times in the past that it is acceptable to say "ancestry" (or the name of any other site) in such circumstances.

After all, how can we help less experienced researchers to learn where to look???

The member concerned refused to accept our word, even when excerpts from previous messages from GR were posted.

So RamblingRose posted this to ask for specific guidance from GR on the topic.

That member continued with her activity.

As you may imagine, not only were you getting afraid of posting in case your post was reported ................. so were we, the helpers, getting frustrated.

The member has since been told officially by GR to cease and desist.

The only times that we cannot use the name of another site is if we are making derogatory comments about it, are advertising some deal on it, or comparing GR unfavourably with it. All perfectly reasonable!

IGP seems to have some problem with the helpers wanting things to be clear .......

and possibly also doesn't believe that other sites should be named.

To be honest ............. I'm not even sure why he posted on here!

For you, what it means is ......................... don't be afraid to ask for help, even if you are saying "could someone please look at xxxxxx records on ancestry .................", especially if those records are not available on GR.

I have mentioned Ancestry,I'm sure, and I really plug Lancs OPC,cos I find it is brilliant, and i want others to know about it too. .
I dont think i've been reported(how would i know,if i had?)
When i click on "my threads",they come up anyway!

elaine

don't worry about it!

you can mention the names

If a post of yours is reported to GR, and they agree with the report, you will almost always receive an email to your home email address from them, telling you that a post has been removed, and why

I say "almost always" because there are times when they do not notify you.

One thing they do not do, is tell you which post has been removed ................... and so you can still scratch your head!

Still not had my posting/query on this thread (25 Apr 2013 09:35) answered. I just would like to know so I can judge for myself if it is fair for me to continue to recommend this site to others while I am on other sites or not?

BlackKnight - it's up to other sites to set their own T&C. You'd need to check with Ancestry.

I've only rarely use their message boards - the ones I have don't seem to be particularly active.

Nudge, for a reply for TheBlackKnight (25 Apr 2013 09:35)

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 19 May 2013 19:42

well, it is not up to MEMBERS to respond to BlackKnight, which is why I haven't replied to him before ............

......... it is really a question for GR to answer

but as GR rarely seem to respond to threads, (if they even look at them) ........

.......................... then he'll just be waiting for ever and a day.

My own personal opinion is ........................

I think you could still refer people to other sites when posting on HERE

what GR objects to is when people compare GR unfavourably to the other site(s)

eg, saying "you might wish to look at the parish records on ancestry"

would be fine

BUT

"you might wish to look at the parish records on ancestry, because the ones on GR are rubbish"

would not be acceptable.

......... at least, that is how I read what has been posted by Estelle several times, and also stated by her in private pms.

I have always said where I have found information when helping others ................... my opinion being that we should also be helping others to learn how to find information for themselves

and I have NEVER received any email from GR to say I should stop.

There is at least one person on this site who would RR any post containing the name of another site, even in "the following information was found on ancestry....."

.............. most of those RR's were reversed by GR

so that could be an indication for you.

To be safe, just be sure you do not make any unfavourable comment re GR.

Hi TheBlackKnight, I am afraid we really can't comment on this. It would be down to the admin of the competitor sites to decide whether or not they allow their users to discuss other family history sites. I suggest you contact their customer support team and ask them.

I am not sure what purpose is being served by nudging this.

Rambling

Rambling Report 30 May 2013 18:49

IGP "listen very carefully I shall say this only once". ;-)

It is so that members, new and old, are made aware of GR's stance on mentioning other sites ( free or paid) on these boards.

There was a good deal of confusion with some members believing it was against T & Cs to mention Ancestry at all for example, I asked admin to clarify and that is what they have done.

This thread can be nudged as many times as there are new members of the site and new visitors to the board, and still serve a purpose.

Thankyou and goodnight.

CupCakes Report 28 Jun 2013 10:32

It can be nudged as much as you like but it doesn't stop anybody reporting the mention of Ancestry on GR threads.

It is a commercial competitor to GR not a free site like BMD

Best is to not mention any name when helping just give the info you find.

Also I'm seen the wording from one of those supposed to be helping
How are you related to XXXX
How much have you researched yourself

I always think what a cheek

Rambling

Rambling Report 28 Jun 2013 10:47

NanaSue, how is it a cheek to ask someone what research they have done themselves? A case in point, my own query on FA yesterday...it would have been a perfectly viable question if someone had asked it of me surely?

You are missing the point of this thread, it is NOT what I think or YOU think about mentioning other sites...it is what GR admin think!

It would be pointless for eg to add a London baptism from the LMA records without being able to tell the poster that the LMA records are on Ancestry, not here. How would that be a help if they wanted to continue their search for THEMSELVES ? It is that kind of HELP that is given here that makes GR the place so many choose to STAY even if they also have other subs. IMO.
