And if you really want to be a detective and try even harder you have to think 'outside the box' (god I hate that phrase but in Family History it really works)

Spelling - mistranscription happens all the time - so my Sell family have been found under Sell, Sall, Soll, Sale, Hell, Holl - well you get my gist.....

And often when searching less is more. So start out with just the first and surnames, year of birth =/- 5 years and place of birth,

With my Sells, I had murderd on one census, but I knew where they had been living in the previous census, so I put in the name of the youngest child on the last census I found them on and the place of birth, up they popped in another part of the country listed as Loll.......

If you really need further help, do as Gwyn says and post some details on here and there are many on here who thoroughly enjoy searching for those 'lost' ancestors.

Good luck :-D

Malcolm

Malcolm Report 10 Aug 2013 16:19

gwyn do you think this could be the woman and if so why do you think she went back to her maiden name then back to blackburn in 1911?

Gwyn in Kent

Gwyn in Kent Report 10 Aug 2013 16:32

Freebmd only shows one registration for that name, at that time, in that place, although as there was no penalty for non- registration there may have been others born.

If there was a breakdown in the marriage, it would be easier to pass yourself off as an unmarried cook than to explain about family, I guess.
The fact that the children are with their father at the time of census means Christiana would be free to go wherever.

Once John died, she wouldn't have to pretend anymore, so could revert to her married name and become a 'respectable widow'.

Did the children go back to her ?
