Can't find record of my Grandfathers birth

Another possibility is that he was a poorly child, and they registered him quickly as Male Aldwinckle

They could have had him baptised immediately in a Private Baptism.

If that were the case ............... most people do not think of amending the birth registration.

OR, they could have had problems choosing names, and registered him as Male Aldwinckle towards the end of the 6 week period after her was born.

Never thought of that, I suppose it is quite possible. Its something I will bear in mind.
Many thanks.

Much appreciated.

Thanks very much for your post. I've just taken another look at the 1911 original census record and yes you are right it does say they had 12 children born alive, 4 living, 8 who have died. I had never noticed that before so thanks very much for the info. I'll have to try and find out who the other 2 children were.
You are right too about the different spellings of the name Aldwinckle, I was aware there are several variations, tho it would seem unlikely my grandfathers would differ from the rest of his siblings, and have tried several variations when searching. But many thanks for your input. I'll keep on trying.

On 1911 it says they had 12 children 8 had died.

I too think its a case of mistranscription going on these alternatives given for them

1841 Allweintk
1851 William lan Allwinkle
1861 CHUCKLE
Then Alwinkle etc.

Just a thought – although it might cost you more and take longer than using the GRO, have you considered phoning/contacting Oundle reg office (assuming that’s where his siblings were registered) and asking if they will make a search?

Chris Ho :) Thanks for your feedback, however James William Aldwinckle is a brother of my grandfather George Edward, but thanks anyway. If you come up with anything else I'd appreciate it.
Its really strange as all of my grandfathers siblings were born in Northants area and he was the 6th born of 10 children and as both my great grandfather and great grandmother both originate from this area its not so likely he was born elsewhere as they didn't move around. He is also listed on both 1901 and 1911 census records as being born in Glapthorn Northants. I don't know what else to do to try to solve the mystery :-( :-(

One thing to consider is where his mother came from and if he was the eldest child.
If mother from elsewhere in UK there is a chance that she may have gone home to her Mother for her confinement, very common for the birth of the first child.

There are 2 other George Aldwinckles born between 1891-1893

1: George Alfred Westminster 1891
2: George Eric Leicestershire 1892

And then you also have to consider mis-transcriptions on FreeBMD which are then copied by Genes, Findmypast and Ancestry in their records which they copy.

And just because you knew or the family knew him as George Edward, that may not necessarily be the name he was registered under.

I have several instances in my own family of children being registered under one name, baptised under another and known the rest of their lives by a completely different name again.... That has been something of a pig when researching.

And in Genealogy the term 'thinking outside the box' is so true. :-D

Just seen your message after I'd sent mine.
Yes thanks anyway - James William Aldwinckle and Rosanna (Rose Hannah) Upchurch were my great grandparents, so that's correct.

GlitterBaby and Porkie_Pie - Thanks - yes I was going to write back that George Alfred is my grandfathers cousin as his father was the brother of my gr gr g'father.

brummiejan - There is definitely a marriage recorded for my grandfather to my grandmother i.e. Sarah Smith in Oundle in 1913. With regards to the earlier census records these I have found.

Although I don't know if anyone else is having the same problem as myself, but when I type in a name for a search it will probably come back with no results but then I will put in another first name and then that, and quite often than not, also listed is the original name I was looking for. Why doesn't it come up originally? It doesn't seem consistent. I can sometimes type in the exact date of birth knowing that is definitely correct and it will still sometimes come back with 'no results' so I really don't know whats going on.

I can see your family 1901 and 1911, but not before, and on the face of it no marriage either. Might he have been born with another name?

Can anyone help me please, I've been unable to find a birth record for my Grandfather. As far as I know he was born in Glapthorn Northamptonshire (near Oundle), He is listed on the 1901 and 1911 census records with these details. I have his marriage and death records but don't know why I cant find his birth. His name was George Edward Aldwinckle born 1892. I have found all birth records for his siblings and they were all born in the Northamptonshire area. He was the 6th of 10 children. So why can't I find his record. Didn't know if I could maybe find it on the parish records, though I don't have access to these. Any help or advice/suggestions would be much appreciated.
