I have been able to view the burial books / records where I live in Barnsley Yorkshire ever since I started my research at no cost the only thing that has changed is when I first went I was given the original leather bound ones the last time I went it was just typed paper work.

You may feel aggrieved, but I do not think any council allows people to view these records.

In fact I do not think councils allow anyone to view any of their records.

Have you seen this? Apparently it came into force last week. It might be worth contacting Dignity Funerals.

Have you been able to identify the Councillor responsible for the Cemeteries? Cemeteries normally get bundled with Parks etc.

I've never been able to work out if it's in Tower Hamlets, Haringhey or Enfield :-0

Not sure if we have 'rights' to view Cemetery records. We probably have to bear in mind that the employees are mainly concerned with providing facilites and a service for the relatives/family of the recently deceased.

A contact gained access to Cemetery records held by Sittingbourne Council a few years ago. He said that he had to sit in a corridor going through them with an employee by his side.

There is a lot of potentially personal information on more recent records - staffing costs aside, could they be concerned about data protection?

lesleymargaret Report 26 Aug 2013 18:24

I feel very aggrieved that the cemetery records of Tottenham and also Edmonton cannot be searched in person and although I have written several times and they always say they will look nothing happens (I have death dates).

Many records are on line or I have been to cemeteries and searched in their offices these are no longer open at any time.

I am not sure what our rights as the general public are but intend to take this up with my MP or the MP for that area any other ideas the Council is totally unhelpful.
