After my 24 hours sub I failed to find a baptism for my grandmother :-(

But it was £5 well spent as I found both sets of grandparents marriages a gt aunts marriage and my dads sisters marriage in 1948 plus my dads baptism in 1936.

Wish this was available before as I had paid £20 for one of those certs 4 years ago, which did not include their handwriting

Yeah I think I will just have to make do with the bits I can read to be honest Det

Thanks for that nanelessone.....Essex has been a problem with having to subscribe to seax for those extra bits of info pre 1837....although not complete it fills a few gaps

Jax – I had a look at the Will last night. He didn’t ‘half go on, didn’t he??!!!

To be honest, on the rare occasions when I’ve had to do the same, my concentration went after about 5 minutes. Try breaking it up into manageable chunks.
One thing that might be useful it that they used a symbol similar to a m or w at the end of a line so that nothing else can be added – an old form of ditto.

Namelessone - Thanks for the info about Essex records + Family search. Although they are handy, the image might give further information, but at least the records they hold are a starting point.

According to the latest Family Tree Mag Family search now has Essex parish records 1538-1900 and Norfolk 1844-1952.

Hope this helps some of you.

Having paid for this Will a few months ago I now find it is on ancestry along with a few Essex BMD's which I hadn't found before

England & Wales, Prerogative Court of Canterbury Wills, 1384-1858
about Robert Kent
Name:
Robert Kent
Probate Date:
2 Jun 1829
Residence:
Cranham, Essex, England

If anyone is bored and wants to put it into plain English for me....I would be very grateful

Thanks Chris...That link has a nice transcribed Will...so it looks like it was he that bought the "Thatched House" and later "The Plough" no wonder he died of Liver disease

I did notice his son James was also a beer seller and Henry Kent (his stepson) born 1827 also went on to be a beer seller in the Midlands I think?

(above from google, has below, also details of his Will, and children)

(9. James GATES was born on 11 Oct 1812 in Rayleigh Essex England, was christened on 8 Nov 1812 in Rayleigh Essex England, died on 24 Mar 1881 in Cranham Essex England at age 68, and was buried on 28 Mar 1881 in Cranham Essex England. The cause of his death was Liver Disease.)

Out of the three missing children Mary could be married as the surname does not look like Kent. Think I have found Ann she was born approx. 1816 and married Stephen Bull in Cranham in 1836, William I have no idea about except that he was left 20 shillings.

Robert only wrote the will in 1828 so James was 24 although the census's say he was younger, Robert was 15, Francis 3, Ann 12 and Henry who is not mentioned at all would have been 1.

I keep going back to the will KenSE, but its hurting my eyes...just one big block of scribble.

I saw that other will Chris but I don't know who he is at the moment so will not be downloading that one....as for the deeds...think I will leave that then

Edit- Found Anne's baptism 1817 Cranham...don't know how I missed that one

Jax, I'm glad to see you have made good progress.

Regarding the Will, it is worth persevering with trying to read it. They usually contain a lot of standard phrases. If you can partially transcribe them and google your result, you will probably find examples of the full phrase.

The handwriting is strange and letters like c, r, e are not immediately obvious. Also there is no punctuation and nouns are often capitalised.

There are lots of examples of transcribed wills of that period on the web.

Amanda,

Amanda, Report 31 Aug 2013 19:49

Hi Jax,

No clues on the Will then as to where these elder children are born or living?

I have ruled out the William who in 1851 says he was born in Stock, his father is also William.

So we need 3 children born to a Robert Kent sometime between 1785-1801 and his first Marriage.
Plus a Robert Kent Baptism abt 1766 somewhere.

I am wondering if the John Kent who died in 1856 might be related to Robert but this John was born in Suffolk although he is living in Cranham.

I am happy to share some Parish searching with you if you let me know which ones you would like me to do.

Kind regards
Amanda

Fed up with it already Chris :-D

Sure there must be an easier way to search for births or baptisms without having to go to each individual parish

Where can I see those deeds Chris? not that I would be able to read it if the will is anything to go by

jax Report 31 Aug 2013 17:30

Chris I have already added those but thanks anyway and have now decided to take out a months sub for Seax to find these other children of Robert and maybe a bit more

I have a James, Robert and a Henry (who died aged 10) with wife Ann

Francis (Boreham) Kent and another Henry with wife Charlotte

Plus now with the will there is also a William, Ann and Mary...not sure where they came from or with whom...off to look at Hornchurch now as they don't seem to be from Cranham

That 1851 census James kent and Francis Boreham are half brothers and James Gates is also a half brother to Francis who I think he sold the Thatched house to for £75 so all rather interesting
