Hi,
Can anyone tell me if I can view original certs on this site, or any other sites. I'm looking for a marriage certificate and have names of the people involved so it would be easy to find but just don't know how to do it. Thanks

Depending on date and location some can be viewed on Ancestry

ErikaH Report 23 Oct 2013 13:07

No, you can't, unless they are among the records transcribed on Ancestry, which are limited

You can find the record of a marriage on freebmd..........up to abt 1955..................and order a copy of the cert from the GRO

Potty

Potty Report 23 Oct 2013 13:12

Ancestry also has images of Manchester and Liverpool marriages and some ones for Dorset up until 1921; also has West Yorkshire.

These are images of original church registers so will have the couple's signatures which certs may not as they are copies of the church registers.

Hi Patricia, why not tell us who they were and when/where married and we'll see if we can find anything for you or give you pointers on where to go next.

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 24 Oct 2013 11:22

If they married in England/Wales after July 1837, the record of the marriage will be on freebmd. from where you can link to the GRO to order the cert

BUT........only the fathers will be named on the marriage cert...............and only if they were known

When and where were these people born?

When do you think they married?

Hi, thank you for your kind offers so here goes.
The names are:
John Dawson and Elizabeth Bell.
John was born in Shoreditch, London, in 1857.
Elizabeth was born in Middlesex in 1856.
I don't know the year they were married but their first child was born in 1882 so I assume it would be before that. I'm also assuming they would have married in London, Shoreditch or Bethnal Green may be, as it seems all their family come from that area. However I'm beginning to find out that "assuming" is not a good thing to do!
Thanks for your help

Put freebmd in your favourites...............and use it for BMD lookups between 1837 and c1955.

Thanks so much everyone for looking up all that information for me. I've put freebmd in my favourites now Reggie, and will work on all the information you found for me Potty. Thanks Pam for pointing out his occupation was probably Mattress Maker. This is getting addictive! :-)
