I want to know if it's possible to look for who lived in a row of cottages in a particular village in North Yorkshire in every census 1911-1841 as there are ghost stories and I'd like to put names to stories (and photos). Is this possible on genesteunited please? seems to only have a "name search" option....

Hi there,

I could be wrong but I don't believe you can search a census on Genes by address but you can on Find My Past.

If you post the address on here there are members who can do a look up for you.

Gai :-)

You can search by address in 1881 on FMP and Ancestry. No idea about GR - never use it for research

FMP has address search for all censuses................but bear in mind that any 'address' which is current may not have been applicable in earlier times.

Villages were mostly recorded purely by the name of the village..............sometimes with a road/street name, if you're lucky

I believe FMP offer 14-day free trial option...................might be worth your taking it up

The 1911 census on Ancestry is also searchable by address. It is possible to search other censuses on there by address but it is complicated. If it is only a small village, you can page through the images. If it is a larger one, you can look at the Enumeration District descriptions for the street name and then page through the images for the correct ED but it is very time consuming.

Hello Canaan - is there a basis or particular set of circumstances to these spooky stories?

Another way of finding out info is the newspaper archives.

Tell us more and we'll see what we can find.

As Canaan is a new poster, I will PM her to let her know she replies here.

Thanks everyone, that's really great advice....the stories are relating to the High Street cottages in the village of Swainby North Yorkshire and I managed to find some 1911 details for the village on here but there aren't any specific addresses really and certainly no house numbers. And just about to finish my free trial on GR so not sure if I will be allowed on here to read or post without a paid subs....so thanks everyone....theghost hunt continues! if anyone wants get in touch again, which would be much appreciated! Happy Christmas to you all..... xx

Once your free sub runs out, you can read but not post.

If someone has sent (or sends) you a personal message, you can still reply to them, but not initiate contact.
The same applies to access to trees - they can view yours if you give them permission, but you can't see theirs in the same situation.

Don't know if this is any good but it has a house number. There are quite a few like this.
I know it says Whorlton but the village is Swainby.
