Thanks to all the kind people who offered advice.
I have fond the site -familysearch.org but it is very different now and not as good as before. But I shall persevere!!

Meant to say that there are now quite a lot of online parish clerk sites which are free to use Alison. It's always worth googling to see what is available for the area you are researching. Good luck.

Hello Alison and welcome to the Community boards. :-)

As Alison is a new poster, I will let her know that she has replies to her query. :-)

My preference is to search in the individual collections at:
https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list#page=1®ion=UNITED_KINGDOM_IRELAND
These include the old IGI and the 1881 census.
The 1871 census there is now also useful, but I prefer to do a search of 1881 on Ancestry - the transcription there is the LDS one, and is free (but the image is not):
http://search.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=7572
[Wales, Chan I, IoM are also free).

The other useful site is the GRO index (up to the 1960s) at:
http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
Pre-1960 is essentially complete, except for:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Births Jun 1940 (91%) ***
Births Sep 1940 (0%) **************
Births Sep 1943 (76%) **************
Births Dec 1943 (1%) **************
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Births Sep 1958 (79%) **************
Births Dec 1958 (0%) **************
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I havent done any research for a few years. I used to use a site called familysearch.org.
On it you could find names and records free of charge. I believe it was all transcribed by the Mormons.
It appears to have been discontinued and I cant find a similar, only sites where you must pay.
Can anybody help me with a new similar site?
Thank you
