3, 500 wow! I bet some will cross in Wigan with deeper research. Didn't know that fact on Finney gypsies. Really interesting. I shall speak with my friend now. She never thought it was possible to find all this information online. ..plus she was amazed at how quick help was available when I got stuck!
Thank you very much.

Haha, just checked and I do have a small number that settled in Wigan :-) Maybe we are related!

Hard to keep tack - most of them lived/travelled Staffordshire-Cheshire. Plus I have over 3500 in my tree now.

The 'Finney' Gypsies all descended from one couple who married in 1842, the wife was a gypsy, the husband (Finney) was not. When they married, he took the 'gypsy life' and they raised their children the Romany way. Any Finneys before them were not gypsies.

thanks for the search tips - much appreciated. I'd ben looking for over an hour and drivng myself mad!
I think there are gypsies involved down the line, as her Nans side have occupations such as "Vagrants" and "Broom sellers" lol

Thanks again all

Some may have 'passed through' Wigan but my Finneys were Gypsies. Well..... if you go back far enough they are not :-)

I searched for George (no surname) with parents names, born Wigan and approx. year of birth. Im used to searching for obscure ones - its the ones who change their Christian names from census to census that are the worst :-)

hi Patchem & Gypsy
THANK YOU
aah so it is transcribed as Tinney! You know I have asked FMP and ANC to look at variations of the name but it hasn't picked up "T"...how do you get it to do that?

Sadly I do not know if any f these ancestors are alive - I am helping a friend and just spoke with her and all we know is Georges Son (Her GrandFather - James Finney). The 1901 result looks favourable with the address as it is the same street aswhere her Nan used to live, so was keen to find this 1911 result.

We know of George through marriage searches then have found him aged 52 in a family grave - which then gave us his birth year of c.1901.

Thanks again - and pity you had any Wiganer Finney's Gypsy haha

Funnily enough, I have LOTS of Finneys in my tree :-) None from Wigan though.

Are any of these your direct ancestor - so we know that they are still alive in 1911?

Thank-you

Dear All

Just trying to look for a family in 1911 but am struggling. Can you help please?

In 1901 they are:
FINNEY, William Head Married M 26 1875 Coal Miner Hewer
Wigan, Lancashire VIEW
FINNEY, Mary Wife Married F 23 1878
Wigan, Lancashire VIEW
FINNEY, Mary J Daughter Single F 5 1896
Wigan, Lancashire VIEW
FINNEY, John W Son Single M 3 1898
Wigan, Lancashire VIEW
FINNEY, James Son Single M 2 1899
Wigan, Lancashire VIEW
FINNEY, George Son Single M 3 1898
Wigan, Lancashire VIEW
HEATON, James Brother-In-Law Single M 17 1884 Coal Miner Hewer
Wigan, Lancashire VIEW
Piece: 3552
Folio: 39
Page: 20
Registration District: Wigan
Civil Parish: Wigan
Municipal Borough:
Address: 16, Swan Terrace, Wigan
County: Lancashire

Based upon Lancs BMD searches I have learned the Mother Mary was maiden name HEATON.
I have also learned that Son George perhaps isn't 3 years old, despite what the census says, he is actually 3 MONTHS old. His siblings are the right age based upon Lancs FREE BMD searches for Finney/Heaton births, but George was born 1901 which would make him 3 months or so on the 1901 census.

I cannot find the family though in 1911.can any one find them?

It would help as I am looking for the address where they lived. to link to some other research I am doing.

Over to you and thank you so much in advance.

Lorraine
