I found this really useful.

Left a SAE with my request. They returned form as No Trace and return my cheque!

I go to the GRO first everytime. Except in one case, they have never failed me. When I then phoned the relevant local RO I spoke to a very helpful lady who gave me all the information I needed over the phone - so I saved £7; but would I get that service every time - who knows.

Everyone, local register offices are fantastic. I sent a request for a birth to the Hoywell office and they searched, and searched, and searched, and sadly didn't find my John Davies, but I know that they tried, and it cost me nothing.

Somebody said the local office copies are handwritten and could include errors. Well some are, but some are photocopies of the original certificate and some are photocopies of a transcribed certificate. So it could be regarded as a bit of pot luck.

But the worst service I had was from the GRO who also don't necessarily send copies of original documents. For my Eli Downs, died in WW1, I got a GRO certificate saying his birth was registered in Hatfield. It should have been Hayfield. Several emails, and I got a replacement - still Hatfield. After a phone call I got a correct certificate, and a couple of weeks later ANOTHER correct certificate and my £7 refunded.

Regards

Magaret
