Hi Kim Sorry, I've only just seen your message. I would put parish church and church all in the address box but do the rest exactly as you said. As for the default hyphen, if you type ' before the hyphen, when you move on to the next column you should just be left with - Hope that makes sense! lol Jeanette x *UPDATE* for some reason it's not letting me type the correct sign in here. What you need to type is the double quotation mark - the one above the number 2 - and then the hyphen.

Hello everyone I have my disc and have tried to make a start but am thoroughly confused!!! It appears I don't have excel on my machine. i have MS word and MS Works but I can't open the files in the works spreadsheet. I get the message 'cannot convert files'. What am I doing wrong? Is it essential that I have excel on my machine?

Hi Can anyone answer this for me please. l have a church on my census, the man put Parish Church in the address box and Church in the surname box. Do l put schd number as 0 , fill out the address box as normal, put church in the surname box and put an x in col H and then put a note in col Y. Also when l have an address missing l put in a hyphen but l have to put this in brackets (-) if l don't, when l go to move onto the next column the hyphen turns into letters and numbers. Is it ok to use the brackets. Thanks, kim.

Vikki When you downloaded your FreeCen stuff from the site did you get several icons on your desktop? If so, have you got one called FIELDS? If you open that there is a list giving you a description of what you can and can't put in the columns and where you can use the default hyphen. I printed it off so I have it to hand as I'm transcribing. Jeanette x

Hi Jeanette Thanks for that but ohhhhh dear! I have got some correcting to do. When I couldnt make out the address I just put a x in column H and a note in column Y as well as what I thought was the address in column G. Will I have to go back and check them all now? lol Vikki xx

Afternoon Vikki! I would put a 0 in the schedule number column, something like Rectory Day School in the address column and an x in column H, followed by a note in column Y. As for hyphens, thye are used in circumstances such as if you cannot read something eg. if you can't read an address you would put a hyphen in column G, an x in column H and a note that you can't read the address in column Y Jeanette x

Hi Jeanette, Carol has had a quick look already at the work. Guess what I forgot to do. Some of the pages were hypens for the address and I forgot to put hypens against the unoccupied ones. Oh well I will learn by my mistakes. Wonder what else I have done wrong. Maureen

That's brilliant Maureen! The two pieces that I have completed had approx 4,000 on - so not that much more than yours. Like Ann said, your putting us to shame! lol. Can't wait til I finish this piece then, then I can move onto those small villages in East Yorkshire! Jeanette x

Hi Ann, Luck to start with a small area. Been temporarily unemployed - started new job last week - so have been able to do quite a bit during the day. Just wait for some feedback now to see how much I have done wrong. Maureen

Hi Jeanette, Had a reply from Carol who did not want me to send the copy disk to her. She was quite happy to receive the work as an attachment. Also sent her a copy of my checklist. With the differences on my disk I needed a way for keeping check on which documents I had worked on - no index etc. The checklist shows which documents are enumerator sheets and the folio/page numbers etc. I think this first area was quite small - only 7 enumerator districts - about 125 images - almost 2600 lines on spreadsheet. Hopefully not too many mistakes. Tried to be very careful hence all the questions. Five enumerators had very clear writing which helped. Also being little villages there was not much in the way of addresses to type. Maureen

Well done Maureen! Can I ask how many entries there were on your disc? Trying to work out whether your the fastest transcriber on earth or if you've got small area! lol Jeanette x
