Hello! Has anyone ever been to the LDS centre in Leicester? Is it worth a visit, and does it hold lots of other records to the online collection? I am looking for lots of people outside of Leics and thought this might be a good place to go looking for them? Any experiences? Sarah (who has eaten too much festive fodder and needs to get out!)

My dearest uncle Mike (I can hear you cry "oh nooo" from here!) First of all I want to say thankyou for being so kind to me during the past year by looking up so many of my confusing family! (The number for the Leics LDS centre is on the website, thanks also for that). Secondly can I ask yet another favour, as I am totally baffled by my "Picks". You have already looked these up on the 1861 for me, thankyou, but the further I get, the worse it looks. Can you help?? I am stuck with the following - you may wish to prepare your darkened room first! John Pick, born 1846 (ish!) in Syston, son of Simon Pick and Mary Smith (the one from the village with the iffy name?). Anyway, John married Mary Ann Preston, I am sure of this and they had two sons Harry 1867 and Stephen 1868, both Syston. In the 1871, John aged 25 is there with Mary and both sons. Now it gets a bit odd! 1881: John aged 34 is a widower, living with his two sons and his dad. 1891: John aged 44 is now married again to Mary Goodman of Smeeton. He is living with his dad Simon and two "daughters", Rose Pick, born 1875, and Edith Pick, born 1881, both in Syston. 1901: John (aged 49 here!), is still with Mary Goodman, his "step daughter" Rose Goodman, born 1882, and "grandson" Harry Goodman, born 1896. My problem is this. I can only find one possible death for (1st wife) Mary in 1874, could I have this wrong? He married Mary Goodman in 1889. Who mothered the daughters as mentioned on the 1891 and where were they in 1881?? Rose Goodman was still married in 1881 to her first husband, and lived in the Oadby area. Does this make any sense? I am very confused, as ever!! Sarah (sorry!)

Righty ho, am back again Mike, somewhat less confused, but still a bit dizzy! Thankyou for the hefty amount of lookups, you are a star. The marriages all fit perfectly with what I know, the death of Mary Pick in Syston also. I am not so sure about the 1872 death, I had seen this on 1837, but the death was registered in Leicester. I found another in 1874, Mary Pick, aged 24, registered in Barrow on Soar, which covered Syston. I think that is my Marys. Am awaiting the certificate. I cannot imagine how you would think any of mine would have been in unconsecrated graves (Yeah right lol, I think they all are!) Re the census, I agree with all you have on these. My main thing now is this: If Mary Goodman was previously Mary Smith (father Joseph, according to marriage info), then how come her father in law was Henry Barsby as per the 1881?? Could she have been married to a Barsby, before Goodman then Pick???? I'll let you consider that one! (Bring back the Hincks!) Sarah
