Crista, thank you so much. This info is brilliant and not only sorts out a problem I had with my Jabez Penston marriages, but gives me two more family names to work on. Cannot thank you enough.

Hi I have some CHRISTMASes who were born in Farnham, although most of the family was born in & around East Worldham in Hants (some in Farnborough, which is/was Berks?). I'll update this when I get home with some more info. I think there may be some stuff that Crista could help with if she has the time! Christine

Hi I think the events that I have are all outside Crista's remit: either births before 1837 or marriages afterwards! The family who must have spent some time in Farnham are: Eli CHRISTMAS

Hi I think the events that I have are all outside Crista's remit: either births before 1837 or marriages afterwards! The family who must have spent some time in Farnham are: Eli CHRISTMAS (b E Worldham 1806) and (Mari)Ann(e) nee FOSTER (b India 1810?) and their children - all surname CHRISTMAS: Ann bap 3.7.1829 Alton Charlotte bap 31.8.1831 Alton William Thomas b 20.5.1833 Wymering/Portsdown Eliza bap 1835 Farnham Henry Pafoot b 1836-7 Farnham, Surrey James* b 1838-9 Lymington [???Farnham 1838Q2 4/106] 30Ap-29May 1838 subsequent children were born in Hampshire again. My sources are of variable quality, so I'm open to new ideas - for some, at least. *James birthplace comes with conflicting info but I think the Lymington one is a mistake. He married Anne WATSON - but in 1868 in London (Middx). He was in the Surrey Police (twice!) before becoming a City policeman. We don't know much about Marianne - maybe it's FOSTER we should be looking for in Farnham??? cheers Christine

Crista - you're a Star! (as I think, from the other posts, you've already been told!) I wasn't even looking at that bit particularly. It's part of The Christmas Tree - someone kindly gave me a copy of that magnificent document researched in early-mid 1970s (i.e. the hard way) and covering a sheet that's roughly A1 in size. (If you don't recognise that European description... A4 is approx Letter, A3 is twice that, A2 is twice A3 and A1 is twice A2 - it's Big, and goes back to mid 16th century). Dinah - whom it shows without a surname - and William are my Gt-x5-grandparents! It says she died 1772 at E Worldham it also says "William of EW & 'Gibbs' in Selbourne 1724 b c 1680 d 1745 at EW" and refers to a Will proved. Not sure what the 'Gibbs' bit is about. I think it means he was in Slebourne in 1724 - which would make sense. Maybe 'Gibbs' is a house or farm name or something. MANY thanks Christine

Hi Crista That's kind of you to look it up. I did sort-of have that info, but it clicks into place better... I had William as born ABT 1680. Now I understand that it must be that the researcher of The Christmas Tree (John Reeves of Southampton) had the info about his baptism - altho' still not the specific date. many thanks for you researches on my behalf Christine PS - still feeling good to have that surname & marriage date for my Gt-x5-grandparents!

Hello Crista, Just found this message board, if you are still looking up marriages canyou please try Richard Chisman/Cheeseman/Cheseman etc, I am sure you can work out all the combinations. Born around 1760, married Jane, surname unknown. Richard died in Shere 1830, had 4 children born there, but first one James was not, or al least haven't found a baptism for this one. Was at Shere last weekend, still a lovely unspoilt village

Crista Report 2 Sep 2004 21:12

Susan, Couldn't find any Richard Cheesemans in the time frame you mentioned marrying a Jane in Shere or anywhere else. There were only 2 Cheeseman marriages in Shere. A James Mackerell in 1836 and a Sarah in 1874. Crista

Hello Christa, Thanks for your kind offer - I've just stumbled across this thread. I don't know if you are still doing lookups but if you are... I'm looking for the marriage of John Pankhurst and Mary Wickes in Witley, Surrey between 1830 and 1837. Knowing my luck they probably married in Kent, where they lived after their marriage, but I can't find any records there, and Mary was born in Witley. Many thanks, Hannah
