Many thanks, Liz and Persephone,
these details are amazing. However Elizabeth wasn't "single" - her husband was already in Australia. it's definitely the family I'm looking for so please let me know your connection.
with thanks

Jeanie

Jeanie Report 26 Jun 2010 18:37

Persey,

The Thomas Quick you have is not the right one. I have copies of all their birth certificates and he did not have a middle name. Also, he was born in 1904 so would have almost been too young to marry in 1921.

yes, Liz, it's the family

Liz 47

Liz 47 Report 26 Jun 2010 23:22

I still cannot find William on a passenger list, but will try again, using variant spellings or wildcards.
Liz

Jeanie

Jeanie Report 26 Jun 2010 23:50

don't worry about spellings etc, you won't find him as a passenger - he was a merchant seaman from the docks of London to Oz/NZ

Liz 47

Liz 47 Report 27 Jun 2010 00:05

Thanks for the reply - I had looked under every combination I could think of! Have you found him on the l9ll census - I know the Royal Navy at sea were on the census, as I found my Grandad on a ship in Gibraltar.
Kind regards, Liz

Persephone Report 27 Jun 2010 00:42

I have checked out marriage/ death records here in NZ for Quicke (as a surname) and no luck with one exception there is a marriage for
Annie Elizabeth Quicke in 1913 to a Robert Ernest Shipp.

(a ship(p) board romance perchance)

Maybe they moved on from NZ to pastures greener or dustier in OZ.

Jeanie

Jeanie Report 27 Jun 2010 08:57

no, we've not found him on the 1911 census but a cousin in Melbourne has found him in Australia on or around that time. is it too nosey to ask your interest in this family?

If I happen to be on the boards and see anyone wanting info regarding us lot down the bottom of the world - I like to show willing.

Makes a change from my own research from time to time!

Good luck Jeanie

I'm so grateful for all your help down-under. Annie Elizabeth would have been 15/16 in 1913 so might well have married young - further info on that gratefully received. For some odd reason Elizabeth (Flint) Quick added an "e" to the name for the 1911 census, and my mother's birth certificate (Alice May, the baby left behind in London).
regards,
Jeanie

The Annie Elizabeth Quicke - here that married Robert Shipp - married again in 1928 to a Richard Kemp. There is a death for Annie Elizabeth Kemp died 01 Feb 1956 which gives hers age as 57 making birth year abt 1899.
Robert Shipp also remarried in 1937. Annie is buried here in Auckland at Waikumete Cemetery.
