There is a William G Canning living with a Joan on the electoral rolls to 2012 in Ormskirk, Lancs

As we are unable to send you details by private message, look on 192.com and buy credits to view. There isn't a corresponding address in the on-line BT phone book under either initials

It's always best to write a letter as the research could be a red-herring + one never knows the health situation of an elderly person. They may have passed away since the ER was compiled.
Make sure you write a return address on the back of the envelope to cover that eventuality

For reference: ships passenger record, Madras to London, 1925, Joan, an infant ,is travelling with mother (Lilian) and sister.
I have also found her baptism details.
Cannot put full details here since Joan and her sister may be living.

for which you may not qualify for access to such data, so my suggestion is to look at Liverpool Archives (archives & family history section) which you may find of use online, or by going to the office itself if you are able, and asking for assistance, here is the link

An Electoral Roll search (and hoping there weren't to many Joan Penningtons in Liverpool) would be an advisable start. You have her year & place of birth already and it's possible the marriage found by Rootgatherer above is the correct one.
