Using the Birth/Marriage/Death records-UPDATED
In our Family History guide you'll find very useful information about the Birth, Marriage and Death records and how to use them to your best advantage. You will find all the information you need here.
There is also information on the Military death indexes and our Overseas BMD records. You'll find this towards the bottom of the page.
The Birth, Marriage and Death records are indexed, and we've also improved the search format to make it easier for you to find your relations.
As well as using the full forename and surname when searching for a relation in these records, you now also have the option of either using a partial name, similar name or even just a letter in both the forename and surname fields. This is really useful when you're not sure of the spelling of someone's name, or if you're having difficulty finding the record you're looking for.
For example, if you're searching for a record for a relation whose forename could have possibly been Lily, Lilly or Lillian and the surname was either Stevens or Stephens, you could enter the forename as Lil and the surname as Ste and click on the 'Exact match' link on both name fields and choose the 'Starts With' option. This will return results for any names that match those partial names.
We've also added some additional fields to help you find the record you're looking for. The Birth, Marriage and Death records now have 'Region' and 'County' filters so that you can choose to see results for the name you're looking for from just these areas. In the birth records, we've added a 'Mother's maiden name' field so you can use that when searching for any records registered from October 1911 onwards where you know the mother's maiden name. The marriage records now have a filter for 'Spouse Name' too, so this can be used if you know the spouse's name when searching for a marriage record from 1912 onwards.
Any matches will be shown in the results list. We will show you the closest match first and then any close matches after that. We will show you all the details as they appear in the index and you can use these to go to the General Register Office to order a copy of the certificate. Any births registered after September 1911 also include the mother's maiden name.
If you do want to see a copy of the index page you can do that by clicking on the link on the right hand side of the page. It's always a good idea to the check the index to make sure the transcription is correct.
As with all our records, you can attach a copy of the record to your tree too.
