1881 Scottish census.
The census was taken on the night of the 3rd April 1881.
- Generally women were recorded using their married names. However, if you can’t find someone then it might be worth searching for them using her married name.
- If a person is missing, it might be that they were simply not at home the night the census was taken.
- Some families changed their names after moving from the Highlands to the Lowlands so bear this in mind when searching the census.
- A woman may well return home for the birth of her first child. Make sure you take a look at the birthplace as it could be an indication of where her parents were living at the time.
- Take a look at the other inhabitants on the night of the census. There could be other family members staying which could give you vital clues as to other surnames within the family.
- Use the details of both parents to try and find their marriage details. This will help you to go another step back in your search.
