Sunnucks / Richardson

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

Maureen Report 6 Aug 2018 16:42

Does anyone have any information regarding an incident we were told of, regarding a family ancestor, either Sunnucks or Richardson where a couple eloped - he was a Groom, she a member of "well to do" family, possibly connected to Brewery, both working at the castle, Golden Green, Hadlow, Kent. Someone gave chase, the horse bolted, overturning the carriage and the couple were killed. Would imagine the time line would be around the mid 1800's.
Any ideas on this would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks, Maureen

Have you done any research yourself?

Just to save us duplicating.................

If she was from a well-to-do family, is it likely that she would be 'working'?

Just because the two surnames are on the record................

Thankyou ErikaH!
Yes, have been researching - Henry Sunnucks b 1843 is our relative, he married Mary Ann, formerly Giles, nee Richardson. They lived in Birling, Kent, and their daughter Alice Sunnucks married Albert Harris - my husbands great grandparents. Their daughter Alice Ellen Harris (m Leopold Geoffery Victor Gower), was who told us this story. She died in 1981 and although we researched, we were unsure whether the relative in question was a Harris or a Sunnucks. Last week we visited my husbands uncle, 91, and asked him about this story, and he maintains that it happened at Golden Green, Hadlow, Kent, which would bring us to around Henry's younger days, and probably a Sunnucks or a Richardson.

Thanks malyon - Mary Ann Sunnucks nee Richardson did have a brother Albert Richardson, born Hadlow Kent, abt 1855, living there with Henry Sunnucks and her, on 1871 Census, so possible was him? Haven't found him on 1881 actually!

The image of that 1871 census says "brother" for Albert Richardson - not "boarder" as in the FMP transcription.

The Ancestry transcription says "brother".

Joseph was manager to Mr Henry Simmons of Hadlow, brewer - per probate:

Joseph Samway
in the England & Wales, National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations), 1858-1966, 1973-1995
Name: Joseph Samway
Death Date: 6 May 1879
Death Place: Kent, England
Probate Date: 24 May 1879
Registry: Principal Registry

I don't see a Henry Simmons, brewer in Hadlow.

ADDED:

"Another brewery stood at Style Place, Hadlow. This brewery was started in the 1830s by William Simmons, being in partnership with Henry Simmons in 1852 with William Martin joining them by 1855. The business was sold to Messrs Style & Winch of Chatham in 1863. The brewery buildings have been converted to housing and are now known as Caxton Place.[15] The surviving building is Grade II listed.[16]"

Thanks for all that Argyllgran! Loads to think about. Tried finding more about Ellen Sickle and Jane Coomber in case although they were servants, either of them was the one. Got me thinking, Florence would have been 15 in 1871, could it be her? Eloping because under age - Albert died, but maybe she was injured and died 1875?

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 7 Aug 2018 21:39

Possible, Maureen - we'll never know, unless maybe someone can find a newspaper report.

I think this is Ellen's birth (1871 says she was born in London):

Births Dec 1849 (>99%)
SICKEL Ellen Sophia Lambeth 4 275

EDIT:

A tree on Ancestry says she married in Ontario in 1879, to Samuel Munro, had several children, and died in 1924.

Thanks again - yes, must have been reported in a newspaper somewhere. Fingers crossed something comes up.
