Struggling with this supposed branch of family.

Would anyone who has info on the following and their offspring, please let me know?

It would be particularly helpful if any trace of the children in the family could be found and to know whether John Linge had children by a first marriage.

John Linge, b 1848 Mayland, Essex
Elizabeth Linge, b 1861 Mundon, Essex
John W Linge, b 1877 North England
Phebe Linge, b 1884 Althorne Essex
Robert Linge, b 1887 Althorne Essex
Sidney Linge, b 1890 Hawkwell, Essex
daughter Linge b 1891 Hawkwell, Essex

Many thanks to all who've helped previously.

Joyce

Many thanks for Linge/Lings/Linjie info. This is a process of elimination for cousins and me because of a suspected name change.

We now know John Linge (b 1848 Mayland Essex) married
Sarah Wallis (b c1851). She was his first wife.

It appears that John and Sarah Lings (note surname slightly altered) in the 1871 Census had one child:

Esther J Lings b Steeple, Essex in c1870.

From the 1881 census it is obvious that they had more children and at some stage (1872 to 1875) they had moved to the north of England presumably with Esther and with Sarah (b 1872 in Steeple)

After Sarah snr died in 1878, it looks as though John Linge returned to Essex and married Elizabeth Thorogood close to the 1881 Census because they are listed along with three children at Althorne, Essex. These children are not Elizabeth's.

Sarah (b Steple c1872)

Alice (b Staindrop, Durham c1875)

W John (b Staindrop c1877)

(Esther b 1870 had disappeared - she would have been about 11 so was she with grandparents? If not, where was she as she was still alive because her marriage to Ernest James Wade is recorded in Rochford, Essex in December 1896.)

In the 1891 census it was clear that John and Elizabeth had at least four children of their own (Phebe, Robert, Sidney, and a daughter b 1891). In this Census, also living with them was John W Linge (age 14, working as an agricultural labourer - this would be John and Sarah Linge's son.

John W Linge born c1877 may be our grandfather (name changed to Ernest William Lee (b Evenwood, Auckland, Durham c 1876) according to his 1904 marriage certificate. We have no proof of a change of names but this may be why we cannot find any further record of John W Linge. Our suspicions regarding the name change arose because we can't trace Ernest William Lee b Evenwood (which is near Staindrop) and a cousing had a copy birth certificate for John W Linge - but she has forgotten where this certificate came from.

What we hope is that a descendant of John W Linge's siblings (Esther, Sarah) or his half-siblings (Phebe, Robert, Sidney, Muly, Herbert, Alfred) has some knowledge of the family history and whether John William Linge changed his name to Ernest William Lee. If so, the answer to 'Why?' would be the icing on the cake!

We continue our search but thank you for confirming what info our cousin held and giving us extra info on top of that. It's very helpful.
