I am trying to trace the marriage records of my x3 grandfather who was called Robert Laidler (Born1828 in Northumberland) and Isabella Spowart (Born 1829 in Tweedmouth). Someone with a good eye please help.

Could she have been married before?

Just wondering the same.

Been looking at 1871 census and the children are not all listed in age order

Because in the 1881 census she had her brother living with her at the time as he was deaf and dumb. His name was Robert Spowart (born 1834), so I just assumed that that would be her maiden name too. In the 1871 census she was married to my x3 grandad with several children

When was her first child born?

I don't have ancestry so can't look at the census.

Was she born in Scotland (her brother was according to the census)

Could they have married in Scotland?

She was born in Berwick on Tweed which is actually in England, but on the border with Scotland. So perhaps she may have nipped over the border to get married. Her children on the 1871 census were Christena c1852, Mary c1855, William c1858, Elspeth, James c1861, Isabella c1866 and my great grandad Thomas c1868. I don't know if this helps.

I have to go out to pick up my daughter now. I will be back on line later.

and there is one for a Isabella in 1856 Berwick to either Richard Darlington or Angus Forsythe .
OR 1858 Glendale only other name on the page is David Scott
so wonder if one of these is a 1st marriage

Selena - Robert was only born in Scotland according to the census tallier's miscomprehension. The image shows the original enumerator has written pob=Spittal, Berwick, and "Scot" has been added in a different hand, yet it is clear from Robert Laidlaw's pob that Spittal is actually in Berwick on Tweed. (Pity you don't see the image, but this sort of thing happens with the two Berwick's all the time, and the records are 100 km apart.)
