Ernest John Allen

I'm having trouble finding a death certificate for my great grandfather Ernest John Allen. He was born in 1875 in St Leonards, Sussex, married Amelia Reader in the Chelsea registry office in 1911, had two daughters (Daisy and Edith), was the landlord of the Black Lion pub in Chelsea and then another pub in Bethnal Green. I have his birth and marriage certificates but cannot find a suitable entry for his death in the indexes.

The family has always thought that he died between 1945-1947 in Bethnal Green and there has always been a suspicion that there was something not quite right about the death.

Any help that anyone can give would be much appreciated as I'd like to solve the mystery.

Which years have you actually checked for his death?

Without some idea of when he was last known to be alive it will be a very long trawl through the indexes - quarter by quarter and year by year.

I've checked the 1940's in detail and actually requested two possible certificates that turned out to be for someone else.

Specifically though I'm told that he met my uncle (b.1945) but died before my mother was born (1947) - but that's not turning anything up.

I know he was alive in 1945 as he was landlord of the pub at that time so he must have died after that.
