I'm trying to find ancestors of:Grace Magdalena Anderson b 1857 Sweden {?} and died 1911 Kyabram, Vic, Aust. She married John Miller. Their daughter, Mary Anne Miller b 1887 London, she died 1982 Kew, Melb Aust.married Portman William Daniel Smith b 1876 Echuca, Vic, Aust and died 1962 Hawthorn, Melb, Aust. Portman & Mary married 1905 Moama, N.S.W. Aust.
Specifically I'm looking for the Swedish {?} side of the family , but any information on the Millers would also be appreciated.

There doesn't seem to have been a Mary Anne Miller born 1887 in London -- Mary Ann? Lots of them. ;)

Where and when did Grace and John marry? Do you have the marriage certificate? It should give Grace's father's name, which could be a start, although if he was never in England, you're probably out of our league here. ;)

Images aren't available to check at Ancestry for Scottish censuses, so it's also possible the age is mistranscribed. I believe you can see images at ScotlandsPeople for a fee.

Hi Kathryn
You may be right about birth date as info is often wrong when handed down.
My info on Grace Magdalena was she was born in Sweden [I have found the same info you sent me and it seems it may be correct]. Garce Magdalena is daughter of George Anderson [spelling could be Swedish alternative] he married a Magdalena, beyond that I have no information.
My late mother-in-law led us to believe thather mother, Mary Ann Miller said her mother Grace Magdalena spoke a foriegn language, but no-one knew exactly which one. Possibly some time was spent on the channel island of Guernsey.
Hope this helps us to confirm or deny a possible link.
Our searches get harder when the ones with the memories are no longer with us.
Once again, thank you.
Regards
Gary

Gary,

Please remove your email addy.

It is actually against the Terms and Conditions to show it.

Maureen -- it's a hotmail address. It isn't identifying info beyond what Gary has already given and many people give, their full names.

I'm right behind not putting anyone's identifying info on the boards (my full name isn't here), but hotmail and gmail addresses -- this is exactly what they're for. Anonymous contact!

I have no idea what a hotmail address is and why it is different.

But surely it is still an email addy.

Gary -- it's amazing how many people have gr-grmothers who were "from France" or spoke some foreign language. ;)

I finally got tracked down by the grx2 grddaughter of my mysterious gr-grfather's elder sister a few months ago. (Putting notes all over Ancestry's censuses sometimes bears fruit!) The ancestor's name was Emma Hill. She didn't know that. She'd always been told her grx2 grmother was a "Miss Montmorency" from France, who went home to France in her old age. In fact, she was a day care matron in Cheshire, and died there. But -- she was apparently born in Jersey. I've never found her parents' marriage or her birth. Those Channel Islands may be the source of a lot of who-knows-what!

We had another one here a while back who was supposed to have been from France and spoke French. She, I discovered, was born Gazajena Rosina Lena Charletta Belle Carter Inness ... in Manchester. In her case, as in a couple of others I've seen, possibly Emma Hill, "born in France" seems to be a euphemism for born on the wrong side of something other than the Channel. ;)

All of which is to say: if I were you I might cast my net wider and closer to home just to see whether there's anything worth following up. Your Andersons may well have come from Sweden ... but they might have just come from Scotland!

Just for info, from the rules:

"Don’t include an email address, postal address, phone number, the address of any website, or **any other personal information** about yourself or any other person in material that appears on the service"

I read that as referring to personally identifying info. Hotmail and Gmail are web-based -- when you get a message via that sytem, it can't be tracked back to you via your ISP, e.g. My "real" emaill address can be used to find out where I live, basically. My gmail addresses won't tell you anything I don't tell you myself! So a web-based email address isn't "personal information", strictly speaking. Unless, as I said, it consists of your name ... but when you've already put your name here (and when, I was horrified to discover, GR does that automatically if you haven't chosen a board name, and discloses your registration name to anyone you PM if you haven't altered your details), well, it makes no diff. ;)

Kathryn,

I have just sent a question to GR as to whether or not hotmail addy are included in section 10 or if they can be displayed.

Maureen.

You may be right about the "wrong side of the 'sheets'" so to speak. If as census records show she was a domestic or servant, maybe her duties included keeping the master of the house warm on cold nights! Hence the lack of more info being available in order to keep things respectable.
