I have a Thomas Anderson born Scotland (acc. to census) living in Liverpool (1881 census) then marrying Martha (Carter) Pownall. They had a child (John) born 1884 in Liverpool. Martha died soon after childbirth. John seems to have been brought up by relatives. He went on to marry Mary Ablett in Liverpool.
I have no record of Thomas Anderson before 1881 or after 1884 so can't trace anything more. His marriage certificate has his father as John Anderson from Scotland. I am completely stuck so any help would be great.

The 1911 census took place on 2nd April and they married in the June Qtr of 1911 (April, May, June) so they probably weren't married at the time of the census?

thanks for this. Yes, that's Thomas's marriage in June 1881 (when he was 47 according to certificate) but it's after the birth of his son John that I have no trace of Thomas. I have the records for his son John and his marriage and their children and the Abletts but it's with Thomas Anderson I have a difficulty. Thomas's occupation according to the birth cert for John in March 1884 was Labourer. On Thomas's marriage cert it says Iron worker living in Park Hill Road - says Thomas's father John (deceased at date of marriage) was Farm Labourer. In the 1881 census when he was boarding with a Esther Carter at 37 Church Road, it says Thomas was a dock labourer.
It says he is from Scotland but I have no idea where - and unfortunately with a father's name of John that's difficult to pin down. Also it appears he disappeared (poss emigrated) after the death of his wife Martha, leaving son John in Liverpool.

I'd seen that two year age discrepancy between 1881 census and marriage certificate so it's difficult to fix exact age.

This man is a General Labourer. Have you ruled him out?

Can you be sure that the Thomas lodging with Mrs Carter is your man? The 1881 census was taken on 3 April and Thomas married in the Jun Qtr 1881. I am just worndering about the 2 different occupations?

Can't be sure but his son John went to live with a family by the name of Carter and Martha Anderson - John's mother, Thomas's wife, was Martha Carter Pownall (her mother's maiden name was Carter). So I think it's too much of a coincidence.
The one you found who is an inmate - it says he is single but Thomas would be widowed then. Also I think having yet another different birth year makes it unlikely.

does anyone have any idea how I could find out where in Scotland Thomas Anderson was born and when he might have moved to Liverpool - given that it doesn't appear on 1881 census or marriage cert?

Looks interesting but can't verify it's the same Thomas, or his father John because slightly different birth date again and common name. Are there any other records anywhere for Thomas that will show town of birth not just 'Scotland'?
