I am trying to find the maiden name of Ann Bridge who was born in Kingsbury Episcopi, Somerset c1817. I can find her throughout the censuses under her married name of Bridge (or Bridges as some censuses show, but have no idea of her name before marriage. Children are Mary Ann born c1837 and Sarah b 1845. Kingsbury PR show a William Bridge married Elizabeth Bonning, but no mention of Ann. Thanks for any help you can give.

I presume this is them in 1851???

That is a big gap between Mary Ann and Sarah, and a big age difference between William and Ann

Is it possible that Ann is a second wife?

There are these two births on freebmd.org.uk .... Langport is the registration district that includes Kingsbury Episcopi

Births Mar 1838 (>99%)

BRIDGE Mary Anna Langport 10 398

Births Dec 1840 (>99%)

BRIDGE Mary Ann Langport 10 372

This is probably Sarah's birth registration ....... Chard is the registration district that includes Ilminster

Births Jun 1845 (>99%)

BRIDGE Sarah Chard 10 387

and James and Mark:-

Births Sep 1847 (>99%)

Bridge James Chard 10 329

Births Dec 1849 (>99%)

BRIDGE Mark Chard 10 369

Buy at least one of these birth certificates, and you will have Ann's maiden name

This is the ONLY way to be sure that you have the maiden name of the mother, and then you can use this in an attempt to find the marriage

As I said, I do wonder if it is a second marriage
..... you could find that out by buying both Mary Ann's certificate, and one at least of the others.

Thanks - thought I'd reached a dead end. William was born in Puckington, near Ilminster Somerset, not sure whether his birth would be registered in Chard district or Langport. I will follow up on birth certificate for Mary and see where that leads. I take your point about the age gap between William and Ann and will investigate further. Thanks so much.

I have found both WIlliam and Ann in census info from 1841 to 1871. In the 1881 census Ann is a widow. Thanks heaps for everyone's help - I will apply for Mary's birth certificate and let you know how I go.

I think I may have a breakthrough - I noticed in the 1841 census that a Susan Priddle was living with William and Ann. The rounding of ages in the census showed them both aged 20, but I guessed they could be sisters, and have found that an Ann Priddle married William Bridge in 1836 in Curry Rivel. Ann Priddle is shown in Kingsbury Episcopi Baptism records in October 1816 - which seems to fit. I will get Ann's birth certificate to confirm.
