According to 'A Dictionary of British Surnames' by P.H. Reaney, the ancient origin of the family name of Archer was Norman-French. Noted in both Normandy and Breton from the tenth century, the name was of note in the field of military enterprise from earliest times, particularly in the Holy Wars in Southern Spain in the early eleventh century. In 1066 bearers of the name Archer accompanied William 1 (The Conqueror) to the Norman invasion and conquest of Britain. In Britain, bearers of the name gave notable and acceptable service at the battle of Hastings and the origin of the name was recorded in the Domesday Book. According to 'Scot's Kith and Kin' the name was also recorded in Scotland. Noted in the area of Ayrshire from the early thirteenth century.
