This man, my great uncle, was born Bennett but changed his name. Family who knew him say that he married a Phoebe and they had a daughter, Sylvia (their cousin), c 1926. I have tried every way I know to find the marriage. The usual way of doing this in Freebmd has utterly failed and Freebmd cannot explain why. When I enter his name and * Phoebe for her I get a number of results, but when I reverse the search on the index numbers - zilch. Checking the indexes myself I find no Phoebes. I have searched and trawled under both surnames without success. I also tried searching for Sylvia and looking for marriages under maiden names (which worked for his brother) but nothing. Any suggestions anyone - please?? I shall keep trying in the meantime!! |

I believe that the family lived in New Southgate, which is now in Greater London, but could have been in Middlesex or Hertfordshire. They later moved to Southend though I'm told that this was after Sylvia was born. Sylvia's cousins, now in their 80s, seem clear that the couple was married. He had a bit of a chequered past (hence the name change) but was trying to make good and it was the family pattern to marry, even though it was sometimes after conception of the first child. |
