This ttf is from my local paper.
Mary Elizabeth Baker born Camberwell 28th Jan 1896
daughter of James Henry Baker and Catherine Gifford
A photo of Mary in her Women's Land Army uniform was sent to her brother in June 1918 taken in Lewisham. Her family did not hear from her after that. A telephone number is given for information.

Perhaps the newspaper article originated from a distant relative of Mary Elizabeth Baker who is hoping to find out what happened to her? Our local paper occassionally includes letters from far flung relatives. :-)

Yes DET It is family member looking for her. I spotted it in the announcements section and wondered if we combined our skills maybe we could help. There are several trees on Ancestry but all have her early history but not post 1918.

Just spotted this post when looking at the Baker "surname board", LK.

Since you had the exact date of birth ... the post-1969 deaths index has these entries for Mary Elizabeth born on that date:

Mary Elizabeth Cox 1896 1971 Nottingham
Mary Elizabeth Graham 1896 1977 Hyndburn and Rossendale
Mary Elizabeth Payne 1896 1973 Dartford
Mary Elizabeth Shaw 1896 1981 Burnley & Pendle

Of course, if she died before 1970, the birthdate info would not find her death.

None of those surnames match up with a marriage of a Mary E Baker, though (except one in 1973 in Staffordshire to Shaw, most unlikely) -- unless there was a second marriage, of course.

Just thought I'd try!

You know there are three people here at GR who have Mary Baker born 1896 at 22a Beckett Street, Camberwell? One of them also has her as born 1898 Camberwell, and two others have a Mary Baker born 1897 and 1898, Camberwell.

For deaths with the right birthday in 1897 (people's year of birth was often misstated in death information; birthdays were more often accurate) there are

Mary Elizabeth Cook 1897 Feb 1992 Braintree
Mary Elizabeth Hill 1897 1981 Pontypool
Mary Elizabeth Hughes 1897 Jan 1985 Bangor

and for 1898

Mary Elizabeth Dickens 1898 1972 Stoke On Trent
Mary Elizabeth Hill 1898 1975 Doncaster
Mary Elizabeth Jones 1898 1976 Ogwr

Now we do get this marriage:

Mary E Baker Hughes Jul-Aug-Sep 1920 Stoke-Upon-Trent

and of courses Joneses:

Mary E Baker Jones Apr-May-Jun 1921 Ashton
Mary E Baker Jones Jul-Aug-Sep 1928 Bristol

but none of them look likely to be connected to the deaths for those names.

Given the year and the fact that she was in the Women's Land Army, is there a good chance she became a "war bride" and emigrated?

I looked for Mary E Baker marriages in the London area around 1918. This one is somewhat interesting:

Name: Mary E Baker
Spouse: Sidney G Penniall
Date of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec 1918
Registration district: Willesden
Registration county (inferred): Middlesex
Volume Number: 3a
Page Number: 712

especially in that he may have travelled unaccompanied to the Canary Islands in 1931 (dob at FMP is 1892). (There was also a Sidney E Penniall born 1890 who married in 1935.) There's no death or remarriage record for a Mary Penniall. One birth, 1919 Willesden; child died 1921 Willesden. Sidney G Penniall was born 1894, Richmond, Surrey. One person here at GR has him in their tree. Other Penniall births around the same time are in Lewisham and Greenwich.

It's just odd how there's no further record of Mary E Penniall, including on passenger lists. Of course, women who lived with partners they weren't married to not uncommonly used their surnames publicly and their deaths were registered under those surnames.

edit - that wasn't Sidney G Penniall travelling to the Canary Islands:

Name: Sydney G Penniall
Death Registration Month/Year: 1924
Age at death (estimated): 28 = dob c1895/6
Registration district: West Derby
Inferred County: Lancashire
Volume: 8b
Page: 616

more edit -- there's no Mary Penniall birth to account for this marriage:

Name: Mary Penniall
Spouse: Sidney H Lewis
Date of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep 1930
Registration district: Hammersmith
Registration county (inferred): London
Volume Number: 1a
Page Number: 777

No Lewis-Penniall births. Lewis-Baker births are a dime a dozen.

Name: Mary Lewis ??
Birth Date: 28 Jan 1898
Death Registration Month/Year: 1983
Registration district: Tunbridge Wells
Inferred County: Kent
Volume: 16
Page: 1935

Name: Sidney Herbert Lewis ?
Birth Date: 13 Feb 1892
Death Registration Month/Year: 1978
Registration district: Ashford
Inferred County: Kent
Volume: 16
Page: 0056

Births Mar 1892

Interesting JC
The newspaper was a Greenwich/Lewisham one. I will give them a call and pass this on.

I will also check out the trees on here.

Thankyou.
