Can anyone help please. I have adoption papers for my sister in law.She was adopted on 10th October 1957. The adoption number was 368 and the adoption took place in Eastbourne and the then county court. Her mother's name was Nellie Louisa Baker, and at the time she was about 15 years old. My sister-in law's given name was Karen Margaret Baker, although it was changed upon adoption. Her original birth certificate was numbered 416 and made on the 20th June 1956 in the register of births for the registration district of croydon and the sub-district of Mayday. My in-laws are now deceased and my sister in law would love to trace either her birth mother/father, or any half sisters or brothers. If you can help please contact us. We will of course respect your privacy and will not contact you or any of my sister in laws relatives unless you give us permission.

Hi Terry,
I have found the irth for Nellie L. Baker registered Jan/Mar. 1940, mothers surname of Sibley. The registration district was Lambeth Vol.1d page 251. So there must be a father's name on the birth cert. otherwise the childs name would be the same as the mothers.

Hello, Nellie L. Baker/Carter married Ronald A. Baker - Lambeth registration district Vol.5c page 2132. April/June 1958. I am assuming the fact that Nellie's surname was Baker/Carter might mean something to the family, but to me it looks like she could have previously been married to someone by name of Carter. but the marriage cert, might help explain that!. I wonder if Ronald was a relative??

Terry, I am sorry I got the last bit wrong, it was Ronald A. Baker/Carter who married Nellie L. Baker Apl/June 1958. So it appears that it was he who was Baker/Carter and that probably he was born to a Baker, maybe unmarried mum, and then she married a Carter and his name was changed, therefore he became Ronald A. Carter and Nellie became Mrs. Carter. Sorry about that mix up.

Marilyn.

Hi Terry, Have been think about this a lot, and the marriage of Nellie L. Baker was to Ronald A. Baker or Carter, but he married under the name Baker because his name actually appears under Baker, so presumably it was the fact that he was first registered (birth) as Carter then presumably his mother married and became Baker and his name was also changed to Baker. So therefore Nellie would have stayed as Baker, so its a rather difficult thing to find any children, for which I have been looking since the marriage, to find Baker surname with Baker as mother's surname as well, there are Baker children born to Baker women, BUT of course some of them could well be unmarried mums having children, hence the difficulty in deciding. if any of those could be their children, especially if they had moved from the Lambeth registration district. So will leave it there I'm afraid, only thing is to, if you live in the London area, to go to the Family Records Centre and look through the records for children registered as Baker to Nellie and Ronald from the time of their marriage.
