If he was born in the London area could this be his birth:-

Name: George Henry Bell
Year of Registration: 1905
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
District: Lewisham
County: Greater London, Kent, London
Volume: 1d
Page: 1142

You could order the certificate but use the reference checking page and stipulate that you only want the certificate if the father's name is Henry.

If you think Henry may have been killed in WW2, his details should be on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website.

Henry could not have died in WW2 as you say he was deceased by 1930 and WW2 had no where near started by then !!

I know where Millwall & Bermondsey are funny enough as i come from & live in London & like i said they are on different sides of the Thames, maybe you should look at a map as Millwall comes under E14 & Bermondsey SE1

Never take family legend as gospel - yes Mill Wall and Bermondsey are across the water from each other though they have always been closely related socially. My father born Bermondsey was a Millwall supporter - it was just a matter of walking through the tunnel under the river.

I think its highly unlikely a grown man of 35 would be evacuated during WW2, possibly his children would.

Nichola as you seem to have been given so much erroneous info from family - can you explain who this chap is so that we can advise how to work backwards from solid facts.

Nichola Report 24 Mar 2009 06:18

the george bell was my father in laws father all the info i have are he died before 1975 in se london and after a long search have found a death for a george bell 4q 1970 southwark which would tie in. on his marriage cert it said that when he married in 1930 to louisa florey he was 25 so going on that i presum that the death i found to be correct as he dob was 5/4/1904 but cant be sure as cant find his birth. when he married the was living at 23 arnold place bermondsey and when my father in law was born the lived at 13 winchelsea building rotherhithe and on sunday my father in law told me that when he died thay lived in jamaica road bermondsey. the family we sent to chatteris in cambridgeshire in the war. he had various jobs in 1930 he was a gen lab and in 1940 he was a council road labourer. my father in law seems to think that somebody in his family was on the railways a kings cross. hope this is any hel[ as this is all i have to go on i have tried the 1911 census but nothing comes up
