I am looking for Bennetts from the Yorkshire area. George born c. 1920. Had at least 1 son, Malcolm. He married Val and they had 3 sons. I am looking for their ancestors. That is all I know, can anybody help?

Woooo, Sarah! Starting from scratch.

You start with Malcolm and Val. Or are you looking only for the Bennett line? This advice applies to both.

If you get Malcolm's birth certificate, you will get his mother's full name (if you don't know it). Then you get the marriage certificate for her and George Bennett. It will tell you their ages when they married, and their fathers' names.

Then you have to find Malcolm's parents births. Eventually, they will be findable here, but they might not be just yet:

http://www.freebmd.org.uk (click on the red "search").

FreeBMD only goes up to 1920ish now. So the George Bennett marriage (early 1940s-ish?) will not be trancribed yet, i.e. searching at that site won't find it. The page for the marriage has to be downloaded at Ancestry, to find the registration details, and that's why at least an approximate date is needed.

Knowing Malcolm's birthdate would be the best starting point, if you don't know George's date of marriage. That will lead to getting his birth certificate to get his mother's name. Knowing Malcolm's mother's name will be essential for finding the marriage, since George Bennett is likely a somewhat common name.

Now, what is "the Yorkshire area"? Yorkshire's a pretty big area all by itself! Do you have any locations?

So -- you're going to be stuck ordering some certificates, but first you need the details for ordering them. Someone can help you find them, but some more info is needed first!

There are at least 15 George Bennett's born 1919-1921 in Yorkshire...

You need to work your way backwards.
Do you know when Malcolm was born ?
His birth certificate should give both parents full names.
Then we can find their marriage.
This certificate should give their ages PLUS their fathers names.
If we are lucky, it might indicate which part of Yorkshie we should be looking in.
Then we can find a birth certificate for George, and get his parents full names, and repeart the process until we can find the family on the census records.

O crikey! I didn't realise it was going to be this dificult! ha ha! I have already done one side of the family, but i had more info to start with, I've never had to do it from scratch before! Ok, I think I may be able to find Malcolm's d.o.b. and possibly Val's maiden name, Im sure someone in the family must know! looking at your advice, that should be all I need to start looking right? Note the pleading in voice...

It's all you need, to start looking, if it's all you can get! The more you can get, the better. (Just be sure to say that it may not be completely accurate, if it's coming from family sources who may not know for sure.)

Malcolm's birth cert should take you a good distance for starters. As long as his mother's surname wasn't Smith. ;)

Just post the info right here when you get it, if you need help to find the birth registration / his parents' marriage registration.
