There are a few John and Marys I think you may need John Juniors birth cert to be absolutely certain you have the right couple.

Theres a big age difference, which presupposes John may have been married before, have you found him on the 1861 census ?

Stephen

Stephen Report 3 Sep 2009 16:37

Hi Lindsey, I havent yet found him on 1861 census........only got his son John Bennetts MC back today with said his father John was a Bricklayer and John was 24......so b1862 (he was also a bricklayer)

thank you for your help over the last few days! It really is appreciated ............if your ever bored and fancy a challange please see my Harriet Lambeth thread - its pulling my hair out! And I'm about to give up

Yes and I hate the word challenge ! I tend to avoid those headings !
I drew a blank with her so far, I'll say this, you have some complicated family, for what one would assume quite normal names ! Well thats all your pocket money blown on certificates ! Back to the drawing board.............

hi Lindsey........saw the clue on the 1881 census that he was John J Bennett b1862..........there are 2 birth records forJohn J Bennetts born 1862 Kensington..........so I really dont think he was born in 1861

Lindsey* Report 3 Sep 2009 21:56

How about looking up the other children see if theres a more positive cert,
Harriet is a good one to try.

Walter looks better, if you order stating father John you will get a part refund.if wrong.
Whats the betting at the end they didnt marry !

Stephen Report 11 Sep 2009 16:01

can anyone help me unmuddle this!!!!!!!!!! I have just come back to this and it doesnt add up!!!!!!!! on the 1881 census we have Mary Ann as a widow........but husband John was alive in 1886 at his sons wedding.......have I got the wrong 1881 census - all the names/occupations tie in though ..........the marriage cert of his son does not say deceased.....................did it always say deceased on a marriage cert????????????

 Lindsey*

Lindsey* Report 11 Sep 2009 18:35

For what its worth I think Mary is underage and didnt marry or John has been married before and these are not all Mary's children, just to muddy the water!

The best hit I found is a birth for Walter which should give her surname,

Karen, that could well be the parents in 1891.........but what I really dont understand is on 1881 census Mary says widower...... Is it possible this could be a mistake??? We know John was alive in 1886 because of the wedding cert doesnt say father deceased.........any more ideas welcome!!!!!!!!

 Lindsey*

Lindsey* Report 12 Sep 2009 11:22

It could simply be that the registrar just didn't ask if Father.was dead or alive.
at the time.
I like the way Mary gets younger on each census!

If the grandparents are Rayners this is the only Rayner? Bennett marriage I can see ?

Marriages Jun 1863 (>99%)
BENNETT Samuel Frederick St Saviour 1d 20
RAYNER Mary Ann St Saviour 1d 20

Shirley~I,m getting the hang of it Report 12 Sep 2009 13:11

how do you know John was alive at his sons wedding? even if it doesnt say deceased against the name he may well have been. depends how the question was asked re his father when the marriage was being arranged.
For instance my maternal grandfather married first in1898 and his fathers name & occupation is given, when he remarried as a widower to my gran in 1909 his dads name & occupation was again given also stated deceased so i assumed he had died between 1898 and 1909 and wasted money on two death certs. An update on FreeBmd one time suddenly threw up that grt grandfather had died in 1884 aged 34 which explained too why i couldn't.t find him on later census after 1881.
So not saying deceased on a marriage cert doesnt necessarily mean the dad was still alive

Hi Karen , thanks for your time, sorry I didnt reply earlier - havent been on for a few days.
John Bennett bachelor age 24 bricklayer - married Sarah Jane Rayner on 3 Oct 1886 . Father John Bennett Bricklayer..........they married in Chelsea.........both residence 320 Kensal Road...........

So sorry about the confusion on the 1891 census I was getting confused with another John Bennett I have ......ignore what I said, I am going mad with all this!!! It seems to be affecting my brain and turning it into a muddle!

Out of interest I cannot find John Bennett 1862 and wife sarah on the 1901 census......assuming that is them on 1891

So do we think that John Bennett married Mary Welch 1860 Kensington? It is going to be difficult to find them both on the census pre marraige!!! There are so many Bennetts!!!

So to sum up....I am trying to trace back from John Bennett born c1862 who married Sarah Rayner 1886 ( I have done the Rayner side so only need help with the bennetts).........their son John Bennett was born 1888 and HE is the one who is on the 2 possible census saying with the Rayner grandparents.........Any help Tracing back from John Bennett 1862 is what I am searching for..........but dont know how I will find a birth record for him as there are so many John Bennetts born around 1862!!!!!!!!!
