Hi Sandra,

Local Archive or Record Office a very likely chance they could have admission/discharge books for the workhouse.they can do this over the phone, but a visit will be needed to view.

Hi Sandra

Could this be them in 1901 -

Name: Annie Bennett
Age: 6
Estimated birth year: abt 1895
Relation: Daughter
Father's Name: William
Mother's Name: Lucy
Gender: Female
Where born: Atcham, Shropshire, England

Civil parish: Condover
Ecclesiastical parish: Condover
County/Island: Shropshire
Country: England

William Shotton 45
Lucy Shotton 39
Annie Bennett 6

On the censuz image Annie is born Salop, Atcham and Lucy is Salop, Brookhouse

The fact that Annie was born in the workhouse does not necessarily mean that her mother was an inmate. Often the workhouse infirmary was simply where pregnant females went to have their child as perhaps that was the only medical facility available to them.

Sandra it would have been better to post on original thread really so that people don't start searching as Karen has done for 1901. :)

Sorry about that, but I need to find out where Lucy was living, as I am still trying to locate her birth, I do have her in the census records for 1901 and 1911

I know Sandra, but you really can't let people go through all the same records... thats why I have added the original thread link...I think ALL the options that were possible have already been gone through pretty well...

Well, I've just looked at the other thread (which I hadn't seen before) and what a lot of hard work has been done, and poor Sandra is still not sure how to find her ancestors.

To answer Sandra's immediate question, Workhouse records, as suggested by Kay, are a possibility. But I think Sandra is still hunting for the family on censuses etc.

To any new people, by all means look at that thread, but I found it hard work to come in so late and get to grips with it. As far as I can see, if people can confirm, Sandra knows her grandmother was Annie Bennett, born 1895 in the Workhouse (Shropshire, forgotten the town), illegitimate daughter of Lucy Bennett. She believes (presumably through family) that Lucy Bennett later married William Shotton.

The strongest sighting of the family is in 1901 when there is William 45, Lucy 39, and Annie Bennett 6 b Brookhouse. At first, Sandra thought this should say Workhouse, but I don't think anyone would put that on a census record.

1901 England Census

Name: Lucy Shotton
Age: 39
Estimated birth year: abt 1862
Relation: Wife
Spouse's name: William
Gender: Female
Where born: Brookhouse, Shropshire, England

Civil parish: Condover
Ecclesiastical parish: Condover
County/Island: Shropshire
Country: England

Registration district: Atcham
Sub-registration district: Condover

William Shotton 45
Lucy Shotton 39
Annie Bennett 6

There are other possible sightings, and more than one marriage, including the problem that Lucy might have been transcribed as Louisa. If you are searching for these, try the other thread. It might already have been done.

Sandra has the marriage cert of the Louisa marrying William Shotton in 1895, where her father is John. But I am not yet convinced that this is the right marriage.

I am not convinced or unconvinced of anything, so I'd rather start again from scratch, I might not get anywhere different, but I just couldn't cope with the other thread.

..........noted as having 1 child, still living and ages are not quite the same as 1901 so may not be the same couple?

Sandra

Yes this is the correct couple, Annie had left home by then and they had a son called William Henry born Oct. 1901
he was the only child by this marriage.
