James was my grandfather and lived in Milton Cottage,Guthrie St. Carnoustie until his death in 1950. My Grandmother was Elizabeth Gourlay. I do not think either of them were originally from Carnoustie. I believe my grandfather was born c1900 but I don't know where. Any assistance appreciated.

Thank you both for this. Unfortunately I have no paperwork whatsoever handed down to me from my Scottish grandparents.
Do you know which is the most recent Scottish census available please.
I will, of course, purchase credits but am really just looking for a reasonable starting point as it is so easy to finish up going in wrong direction.
