My Grandmother - Ada Brown

Kathryn Report 2 Sep 2009 16:53

Hi - I'm trying to find details of my grandmother's birth. Her name's Ada Brown - born Liverpool, possibly 1881/82. (not sure about the year!) . All I know is that her father's name was Joseph Brown, & that she moved to Bradford, West Yorks at some point & married George Paley there in March 1906.
Can anyone give me any more info on a Joseph Norman Brown, born 1849/50 in London? He is a possible candidate for my Ada's father - he has an Ada born Sep 82 in Liverpool (familysearch). This is the closest I've been able to find, but this dob doesn't quite tally with Ada's age on her death cert - aged 53 in 1935 (Bradford). There is also a bit of an anomaly with regard to Joseph's occupation - Joseph N. Brown is down as a postman - I believe retired postman on the 1911 census, but on my Ada's marriage cert (in1906) her father's occupation is "school caretaker"
I've got Joseph N. on the 1881, 1891 & 1901 census returns (a postman on every one) & it looks as though he remarried (post 1891) & had another family - possibly an explanation for Ada's abscence - maybe a family fall-out on his remarriage. It looks as though this Joseph may have been involved with 2 families - he has a daughter (Margaret)aged 1 on the 1891 census, but in 1901 he has a son, James, aged 12. Sounds like a bit of a Jack-the-lad!!!! He doesn't seem to be on any of the trees on genes, so I can't ask for info there.
Also - were census records always taken in April, as they are now, or did the dates vary back then? This could be crucial in finding my Ada's birth details. Without sending off for the birth certs of ALL the Ada B's born around that time in Liverpool, I can't make a decision as to which one's mine! I've looked for a single Ada, not living with her parents, possibly working as a servant (or barmaid, as on her marriage cert) on the 1901 census, but all the Ada's I can find are living with parents (none called Joseph!).

Anyone able to offer ANY more info? I'd be very grateful for anything at all as I'm stumped!
Regards,
Kath Magson

do you have her birth cert? that must be your next step I'd have thought.

or her marriage cert, see how old she was when she married.

Where/when did she die?
