Robyn Report 1 Nov 2010 08:40

George Middleton Brown was born in Auchtermuchty in Scotland around 1849, parents Robert Brown and Margaret Low. He married Christina Speed in Collessie in 1874. They moved to Durham and in 1889 Christina, children, her father and sister came to Australia. George seems to have disappeared as haven't been able to find a death certificate and on his daughters marriage certificate in 1901 says he was deceased. Does anyone know what became of him? He was my husbands g/g grandfather and I don't think he came to Australia nor is he buried with his family here in St Marys NSW. Would love to know what happened to him.

The last I can find of him is in the 1881 Census he was living in Foster Street Hebburn Quay Durham England and his occupation was a sawyer. His children were Jane, Robert,Margaret,Christina,Andrew (died in Durham) and John (died in Australia). Christina his wife came to Australia aboard the "Cuzco" in 1889. Any idea where I can find him.

Hi Catherine
Thanks for that. I have been searching for George Middleton Brown and maybe should look outside the circle so will see what I can come up with now. His youngest daughter was born in 1885 so he was still alive around that time and his wife came to Australia in 1889 so it narrows it down somewhat.

Hi
I've sent away for a death certificate for George Brown 1848-1887 Lanchester Durham as that appears to be the one most likely to be him I feel. As Christina and family left for Australia in 1889 (probably only a year or so after he died) and came out to be with her brother who she maybe expected to help her. She never married again and he was on her death cerificate but it only states he was her husband not whether he was alive or dead. The only reference to him being dead was on their daughter's marriage certificate in 1901. Thank you for your help, just hope I've picked the correct one.

I received the death certificate for George Brown from Lanchester Durham and it wasn't the correct George Middleton Brown unfortunately so disappointed.
I'm back to square one again so does anyone have any ideas where else I can look. The others as listed above do not appear to fit in the time line I have for him. I'm starting to think that maybe she left him and brought her children to Australia but would love to be certain. His daughter says he is deceased in 1901 on her marriage certificate and they came out in 1889. The last child was born in 1885 so there is a window that appears to be missing.
Any help appreciated.

I've not looked at emigration to Oz, but seen plenty to Canada.
It's quite common for someone (usually hubby, but maybe a bro) to come over first, check the place out and get settled, then send for the rest of the family.
I'm wondering if George came over first, and there's maybe a death for him over there - maybe even before Chirsty and the kids came over.

Unlike Scottish and many Oz d.certs, English d.certs contain little genealogical info, as you'll have seen from the wrong George you got.
Although George & Chirsty's parents wed pre 1855, they were all alive in 1861, so it's worth getting their d.certs.

The parish of Arngask used to straddle 3 counties (PER, KRS, FIF), but the county boundaries were changed in the 1890s and now it's in Perth.

Hi mgny
Thank you for that, I do have Andrew Speed's death certificate as he was the only one who came to Australia. Will get the other death certificates especially for the Browns after Christmas but am sure George was still alive when his father died in 1874 as his last child was born in June 1885.
George Middleton Brown didn't come here as far as I can be sure, there is no death certificate for him and he's not buried with the rest of the family and they are all together at St Marys NSW cemetery. Christina's brother was already here and her father, sister Jane came out with her and the children. Robenia died along with their mother in Scotland before they came out.
I just hate not knowing what became of him as he's the only one I can't sort out and Brown such a common name.
Robyn.

Robyn, maybe you know already, but anyways:

For Scottish stuff, you'll need to buy credits at SP.
The main SP site is http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/
Examples of d.regos at:
http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/Content/Help/index.aspx?r=554&404
(links to other examples in right margin)

There's English examples near end at:
http://www.direct.gov.uk/prod_consum_dg/groups/dg_digitalassets/@dg/@en/documents/digitalasset/dg_186584.pdf

For SP stuff over 100y old, the cost is abt 1 GBP per image. They also have the census images.

Searching at SP can get expensive, so try alternative searches first, then use SP when you're ready to spend your quid.

Ancestry has transcriptions of 1841-1901, but lack marital & disability status.
FreeCEN has some transcriptions of 1841-1871 at:
http://www.freecen.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
FreeCEN's coverage varies very much by county - older is more complete.

For OPRs, check the IGI.

For UK pics - like Arngask kirk, try:
http://www.geograph.org.uk/gridref/NO1310

Go to http://www.streetmap.co.uk/ and search for 326900,710100 then zoom out a step and then get a larger size map If I've got it right, you should be at Bowhouse Farm, midway between Wester Kilwhiss and Easter Kilwhiss, each 1km away. (The blue grid lines are 1km apart). I can't see Kilwhiss Farm now, but it must be around here that it was.

I have found a George Middleton Brown marrying a Mary Elizabeth Jones in 1903 in the Jul-Aug-Sep quarter in the Cleobury Mortimer District in the county Herefordshire,Shropshire,Worcestershire and was wondering if anyone can help me find when and if they had children or when they died.
I would dearly love to find what happened to George Middleton Brown as I've contacted another family member and he tells me that the story in their family was that he died at sea and was buried at sea. George's family came out to Australia on the "Cuzco" in 1889 and he wasn't listed as a passenger so how can I find out if he left England on board the ship. Can anyone help me?
