Hello all, I am looking for information on Robert Stewart Forbes Brown, place of birth unknown, date of birth unknow (I know like looking for a needle in a haystack).

He appears on the marriage certificates of two sons, Robert Stewart Forbes Brown (aged 25) in 1890 in Winchester as a Sea Captain, again named as father on son John James Brown (aged 26) marriage cert as a "Late Bandmaster" in Emsworth Southampton in 1899. He does not appear ony any census I can find.

I also cannot find any trace of the above two sons, either Robert Jnr or John, neither in census or births. John is not at the address of my grandmothers birth in Sept 1901 on the 1901 census, neither is his wife!

Robert Jnr was a "Telegraphist" on his marriage certificate, John was a Corporal in the Royal Irish Rifles based at Gosport.

I suspect there may be an Irish/Scottish connection, but this is pure guesswork.

Any information will be gratefully received.

Thanks
Keith

Hello Keith found marriage record 1890 for Robert S F Brown tried to find on 1891 census for Winchester but drew a blank tried Charlotte and Elizabeth as either possible marriage mate Kersley or Wilkins but as you have cert you know which one.
I did find a death record for a Robert Stewert F Brown 1891 Winchester Oct-Dec vol 2c page 70 age given as 0 so first born child of couple I would think.

I did find another Stewert Forbes Brown b 1907 died 1910 but that was Tynemouth Northumberland age 3
a John Forbes Brown was born 1868 Liverpool oct-Dec 8b page 167 don't know if any connection via the Forbes name. did find a Robert Steward Brown b 1841 Durham but Brown very common name and millions of them and I thought Clark was bad enough my ancestral line good luck Pat

Thanks Pat, will check those out.

As you say, I do have the marriage cert, Robert SF Brown Junior married Elizabeth Wilkins, and yes the birth and death of Robert Stewart F Brown is their child.

John James Brown married Caroline Elizabeth Taylor, and I know all about her family.

Unfortunately I suspect that John F Brown born 1868 Liverpool was born too early.

Have waited twelve years before I tackled this family, I knew they would be trouble, but more than I expected, have been searching for a year now!

Regards
Keith

UPDATE

On the marriage cert of John James Brown, it states he was a Corporal in the Royal Irish Rifles.
From this information I have been able to obtain his service records and also his baptism certificate that was used as evidence of age when he became a postman in 1901.

His service records state that he was born in Cape Town, and it lists his brothers and sisters, but no Robert Stewart Forbes Brown listed as brother!!!! Maybe that was a red herring!

Again on his service records and his baptism record it gives his father only as Robert Brown, Band Sgt 86 regt of Foot (Later 2nd Irish rifles).

I have found possible matches in the 1891 and 1901 census for the father Robert and mother Margaret (b Ireland if it is them), they also have with them two siblings of John, born Mauritious and Aldershot, I have traced the postings of the 86th so have a lot more to follow up now.

Keep hunting, the answers are out there somewhere.
