In researching my husbands tree I came across an 1881 census record which showed James Burke born 1878 in Gateshead. He was living with his grandparents James and Bridget Burke (born Cox) who are shown as being 53, together with their children Mary (24), Annie (22), Ellen (20), and James Owen (15). I have identified about 4 possible birth records for him james burke 1877 Q1 Newcastle 10b/117, james burke 1877 Q3 Tynemouth 10b/200, james burke 1877 Q4 Durham 10a/420, james burke 1879 Q2 Tynemouth 10b/208 but I would rather not pay £28 for the privledge of finding that none of these are related to anyone in my tree.
I have not managed to find anyone with a James Burke born 1878 in Gateshead on their GR tree.
Can anyone please help me - or am I going to have to ask for more housekeeping so I can get these certificates :-) Thanks for your help Fiona

Ellen is my husbands g Grandmother. She has a brother James Owen who was born in 1865 - so that is not the one in the 1901 census. The man in the 1901 census could be the James born in 1878 but although it says he is a brother in law I am not convinced that this is a true relationship as I have a feeling he is actually either Ellen's illegitimate son or the illegitimate nephew by one of her siblings who was brought up by Ellen's parents as a son.
Looks like I am going to have to get the Durham birth cert to try to find out who this guy is

OK I bit the bullet and spent £7 on the birth cert for James in Durham. I now know that this James had a father called William who was the Police Officer at Shincliffe Colliery and a mother called Mary Horsley.
None of the above fits with anything I know about the Burke family so I am still looking. :-(
Might have to get some more certs after next payday to see what i can find out

I know son-in-law used to be used for the relation we now call stepson, as well as being used for daur's husband (sim daur-in-law). I've not seen bro-in-law used in a comparable way, but I suppose it must have been.
