The Burkes and Bourkes in ireland are of Hiberno-Norman origin. The name was then known as de Burgo. It ranks as the 14th most numerous in Ireland,the second most numerous in Co.Galway. William de Burgo,known as William the Conqueror is accepted as the originator of the name in Ireland. Some famous Burkes include Edmund Burke (1729-1797) of Dublin,Politician,Writer,orator of Prominence,John Burke and son Bernard of Tipperary,originators of Burkes Peerage. Martha Jane Burke known as "Calamity Jane" in America and Mary Bourke known as Mary Robinson elected President of Ireland in 1990. Variants: Bourke, de Burgh Meaning: "The Borough"
