The 1901 and 1911 Canadian censuses are free on Automated Genealogy. If you click on "split screen" on 1911 you'll see the original which says that Duncan Sr. was born Scotland and emigrated 1853. Duncan Jr. and other children born Ontario.

http://www.automatedgenealogy.com/index.html

Actually Duncan Sr.'s age is 90 on the 1911 census. I think this is his death:
Duncan Cameron born 1821 Scotland, died 15 April, 1916, Oakville, Halton, Ontario., age 95. Parents Alexander Cameron & Margaret Cameron.

Hello Margaret

I have just found a marriage for Duncan Cameron and Christina McNaughton in Scotland in August 1853, how can I check the date that they emigrated?

thank you Angela

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 14 Oct 2009 15:49

I'd better re-check. I said the 1911 census says that they emigrated 1853 but on the 81 census it says that daughter Isabella was born 1856, Scotland.
I don't have access to passenger records but there are others on this site that do.
I'm just off to see what year of immigration the 1901 census gives.
Update, I think the 1901 census says that they emigrated 1858.
A second look at the 1911 census with a magnifying glass and it says emigrated 1853,

The 1891 census has Duncan Cameron, widower, age 70, born Scotland. a Presbyterian minister, with daughters Isabella, 34, and Marg, 30, both born Ontario. They're in Middlesex North, Ontario.
Can't find Duncan Jr. in 1891.

Thank you Dee I am sure this is what I want.

I am almost sure that Christina is the aunt of my great nan Annie McNaughton.

Christina had brothers John and Duncan and her mother was Isabella Stewart so the names of her children would certainly link

Oh my goodness! On that 1861 census that Dee found, they're in my neck of the woods! I'm not far from Lochiel, Glengarry. Hopefully I can dig up more.

In the 1857 Directory of Ontario there's a Rev. Duncan Cameron, Quigley's Corners, Glengarry, Ontario, Free Church. Makes it look like the 1853 year of immigration is correct and not 1858.

Was your family, perhaps from Perthshire?
From "The Kirk in Glengarry"
Rev. Duncan Cameron took over the Lochiel Free Church in 1854. A year before he had come to Vankleek Hill through the Colonial Committee of the Free Church of Scotland. A native of Perthshire, studied at University of Edinburgh, he stayed unti 1870. He returned 30 years later to take part in the Golden Jubilee of the Lochiel Church on Monday, 29 October, 1900.

(I bet there'll be a report of that in our local paper which I can check next time I go to the library, if you think it's the right Duncan Cameron.)

Hello Margaret

My family are the McNaughtons from Logeriat,Perthshire.

The name Cameron has come up in the will of my great great uncle Donald McNaughton, my great nan Annie was his niece.

I think the wedding on Scotlands People in August 1853 was Duncan Cameron and Donalds sister Christina.

Angela, sorry thanks for all your help so far, look forward to seeing if it is him in the picture.
