I am trying to trace my grandad,
Alfred arthur edwin champion d.o.b 8/6/1924.
Born Guildford, Surrey.
His mothers maiden name was Meelen/Maelen.
He had a sister named Edna, now deseased.
He married Kathleen Cilgrim on 5th Dec 1945.
They had 2 children together, Linda Margaret Champion born 1946 & Alfred keith Champion born 16-18 mths after Linda.
They lived together on nursery road, knaphill, surry.
They seperated between 1953-55.
Kathleen moved back to cheadle, stockport & took the 2 children with her.
They later divorced.
Alfred wanted to sort things out with Kathleen, but she had found out he'd fathered 2 more children with an unknown women whilst they were still married, its believed one of these children was named keith.
My mum Linda as never seen or heard anything from her father since, she would have been around 9 yrs of age.
He decided to leave the country & on 27th jan 1955 he boarded the Edinburgh Castle ship.
The ship took him to South Africa, the owner agent of this ship was the union castle line.
Alfred went on his own, he took no children or adults with him, the address on the outward journey he left as his last permanent residence of the uk was 28 nursery road, knaphill. This address my mum believes may have been a friends as she remembers living at 4 nursery road, knaphill.
He was an engineer whilst in the uk.
He went over there that day & we believe he never came back to the uk.
On the ships document at the side of his details, reads Country of intended future permanent residence, S.R which stood for Southern Rhodesia now zimbabwe.
My mum believes he may have gone over there to live because he may well have had friends over there from when he was in the navy.
He would have been 31 yrs old when he left for south africa, he may well have remarried over there & started another family.
We have traced his birth & marriage certificates in the uk, but there is no trace of a death certificate, he would now be 84 yrs old & he may still be alive, my mum believes he never did come back to the uk, & she believes he may be deseased.
i would really appreciate any info on trying to trace him.
Help with where do i go from here ect...
Thankyou to anyone who maybe able to put me in the right direction searching.
