Just curious -- because the only John Hughes-s born in NSW in 1842 were:

V18422522 134/1842
HUGHES JOHN
JOHN
ANNE

V1842226 134/1842
HUGHES JOHN M
LUKE
BRIDGET

and there was none born 1842-45 with parents John and Jane.

However, there is this death:

7717/1905
HUGHES JOHN W
JOHN
JANE
SYDNEY

Could some of the birth info you have be inaccurate?

Huh. I read the title -- John and Jane Hughes -- and figured they were a married couple, making Hughes his surname and the surname of the child ...

Okay. It has likely been posted on the Collins surname board, blast those things to Hades. So the surname Collins is assumed for John, and the Hughes applies to Jane. Fine!

Yup. Here it is on the Collins board.

Oh, for management that managed this site, and acknowledged the things that don't work, and did something about it.

Probably 1 in 20 people who post here don't include a surname in their post, because they see it when they are composing, and have no idea that no one else can see it.

Rant over!

Christine -- do you have their dates of death, and have you found the death records? With luck, they would give parents' names, and the certificates would gives ages at death, which could help search for their births. With such common names, though ...

If Jane was from Scotland, she likely has to be one of these (I spent a cheapie credit to get the listing of Jane Hughes births, 1800 to 1827):

15/09/1808
HUGHES JANE
PETER HUGHES/JANE HALLADAY FR213 F
Penninghame /WIGTOWN
895/ 0010 0393

01/09/1810
HUGHES JANE
HENDRY HUGHES/JEAN CARR FR163
Foulden /BERWICK
741/ 0020 0003

01/09/1810 HUGHES JANE
HENDRY HUGHES/JEAN CARR FR103
Foulden /BERWICK
741/ 0010 0359
(oops, that's a duplicate; must have been some problem with the frame number -- 103 / 163)

08/12/1815
HUGHES JANE
RICHARD HUGHES/GRIZEL JACK FR502
Shotts /LANARK
655/ 0020 0213

06/11/1809
HUGHES JANET
JAMES HUGHES OR HUSTOUN JANET BARBER FR30
Dunscore /DUMFRIES
822/ 0010 0025

08/03/1822
HUGHES JANET
JOHN HUGHES/AGNES WATSON FR472
Lochmaben /DUMFRIES
840/ 0030 0014

Scottish naming patterns were very rigid, apparently. Do any of those parents' names fit your family?

No marriage/banns for the two names are listed at the site:

http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

... not allowing for spelling variants (Hughs, Hews), of course.
